"One couldn't agree that kilkenny were always superior. As a matter of fact before the formation of the Gaa, Galway was practically the only place where hurling survived and was played." I agree, Galway were superior when no other counties were playing hurling. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2693 - 04/02/2023 21:17:08 2456466 Link 0 |
Why weren't other Counties playing hurling?

Cork Wexford and Antrim also kept hurling

As did Limerick, Tipp Clarr and evan parts of Kery. Why do you think five Munster Counties contested AIFs in the first decade of the GAA?

Ah yes OTM allow those were playing in the 19th century. I was referring to the 18th century!

Do you really think the game was not played in many of those areas in the 18th Century.. The first recorded Tipp v Cork took place in Rathcormac in 1753. In my own Home parish in West Limerick, there is a townland called for Centuries Ballycommane- the townland of the Hurlers.

Yes it was good to see the game spread back into Tipp by then. If it hadn't we wouldn't have had the glorious big 3 we have all enjoyed watching so much!!!

Tremendous achievement for Henry to bring silverware in just year2 of his tenure. 'Past hurler' needs to amend our honours tableau there, to incorporate our increasingly storied Walsh Cup escapades.

There was no such thing as County hurling in the gaelic system. The county system was brought in by the English. The gaelic system was based on local rivalry, between townlands or parishes. Hurling lasted where the Irish language was spoken - it was strongest in rural Galway, Cork and Wexford in the 19th century.

In Nowlan Park years Limerick ago edged KK in a February League Game. One of our supports was making a big deal of it. An old KK simply said "Son, wait until the Sun is high in the Sky'. Ageless good advice.

OTM one of your fellow Limerick posters sarcastically "congratulated Galway" on winning the Walsh Cup so I responded to his sarcastic post - please read all the posts carefully before chiming in with your tuppence worth! Limerick posters here seem to be obsessed with Galway which is a compliment I suppose.

Early days but good win for the Banner today.... I've predicted a Galway v Clare League Final....fingers crossed!! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2522 - 05/02/2023 16:40:44 2456593 Link 1 |
You really could do with watching Conor Whelan's post match interview last night. He called the game "pre-season". It really doesnt matter 2 hoots who plays in the League Final or who wins it because all that matters is to have the team primed and ready for when the season actually begins; i.e at the commencement of the round-robin provincial championship.

I'll take the League title any year you get the Chance, yes Galway will be ready for the Leinster Championship... ... in all honesty if we can't win Leinster this year, Kilkenny hanging on like a loose button, Wexford no threat whatsoever and Dublin hmmmmm no comment!! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2522 - 05/02/2023 19:28:03 2456728 Link 1 |
Let us be honest, apart from Wexford supporters, who is there to have a bit of crack with, apart from yourselves. Clare contributors seems to have all but gone into Hibernation since KK beat them heavily. There is no contributor from Cork since the '21 FINAL, There is only one Tipp and one Waterford man on here regularly and a few from the Midlands. The fact is Wexford men and those from both our counties are all that contribute in fairly big numbers with one or two from KK

Why is there no hurling then in the Kerry Gaeltacht, west Donegal or Connemara where the Irish language is strongest? You're talking nonsense.
