I know there's no province to worry about but still players hate playing in the mud and rain. Think the 3 week gap between the 1st and 2nd round was unnecessary especially when there was no need, think on the entire galway football panel there was probably 1 or 2 lads playing club hurling at most and even then they were in the considerably smaller intermediate championship with a lot less teams. We're not a true dual county in the sense that lads play both, it's very rare and even a lot of the lads who've been on county panels in either hurling or football don't play the other even at club level while with the county panel. Even our most famous dual player in recent years didn't even play with Corofin till county final time or later. Moycullen, our only club with two senior teams don't have much if any cross over. Don't get why the hurling championship had to be held up or even just the senior one. We're only at quarter final stage and the footballers are at final stage despite them getting to th all Ireland final. I know we've a lot of senior clubs but surely that was more of a reason not to delay it. Hopefully the less teams helps with this next year. I know people might say it helps teams cus no promvince but still annoying training in all the nice weather for a championship that will just not be played in that kind of weather. Doesn't help the game as a spectacle, when was the last good county final we've got to see? Some of the that may be down to Thomas's usually been a good bit better than opposition but even before their domination began, there's been a string of poor quality finals, especially ones played in Pearse Stadium which is probably the worst inter County pitch location in the country

Very fair points but I don't want our County Champs sitting around for too long after the County Finals either. One lad from Tipp pointed out that the Tipp Champions play BallyGunner in their first round of Munster. While all that is going on I'd hate for our lads to be sitting around doing nothing. I guess what I'm saying is I want our County Champs as sharp as possible. As you correctly pointed out though the quality of play suffers as the weather gets worse. Sigh.

Big weekend in the quater finals this weekend. Should be good games especially the loughrea turlough game. plentyofstick (Galway) - Posts: 88 - 28/10/2022 10:46:41 2445757 Link 2 |
The only contest this weekend really is the Town v Turlock. Should be a good game but if Loughrea get there act together which I think they will, they will win. In the past (at different stages) the two filthiest teams in Galway but not these current teams, they both have decent hurlers all over and are well able to play. Hopefully sunday will be dry.

I'll take Sarsfields over Portumna. Turloughmore over Loughrea. St Thomas's over Cappy. Clarenbridge over Tommy's. I'm fairly confident in my picks except the Loughrea match. That match is giving me fits.

Congratulations to St Thomas's and Clarenbridge. No I'm not confident of tomorrow's matches. I just guess my best. Not a betting man at all.

I was right. And made a nice few pound while I was at it. What a game that was between Loughrea And Turlough. Super hurling. Hopefully loughrea have some left in the tank after it. I think nobody can disagree with the fact that the four best teams in the county have reached the last 4. The poor wasteland of East Galway hurling nowhere to be seen in the final four. clare_sparrow (Galway) - Posts: 441 - 31/10/2022 08:14:08 2446018 Link 0 |
Portumna had a great season and were well in that game against Sarsfields and if a few things went differently could've snuck it. Joe Canning was class, the way he's playing now, he's more similar to the powerful ball winning early Joe Canning of the late 00s than the centre forward Joe of 4/5 years ago. He's class to watch. Conor O'Hare, Andy Smyth and Adam Fogarty were also very good. I also think they might regret not leaving Jack Canning in the backs. Sarsfields are a good team and did enough but I don't see them beating Thomas's, could be a very good game as usual between them but Thomas's to prevail as usual. Turlough had one of the most turlough years yet, beating Thomas's 15 points and still out by the quarter final. 1 county final appearance in 32 years for all the talk, all the hype, all the underage success, mind boggling. Maybe they just aren't as good as we make them out to be, I'm sure no one is asking more questions than themselves. Maybe the lack of a real quality dangerous forward is that difference. Probably haven't had one since Martin Naughton or even Franny Forde, the lad who's going to make a goal out of nothing, get a point out of nowhere and keep the defense worried and scared the whole game. Pity Ronan Badger suffered from injuries the way he did, could've been that, still the best natural killer forward they've produced the last 20 or so years. Sarsfields v St Thomas's and Loughrea v Clarenbridge. Getting tougher and tougher to pick matches. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2282 - 31/10/2022 13:13:01 2446035 Link 1 |
Why are they playing the two semi finals as a double header in Salthill? Guaranteed a dreadful atmosphere when you could have had them in Athenry with a big crowd. Terrible decision in my opinion. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 806 - 31/10/2022 14:12:45 2446039 Link 1 |
One thing I cant understand for years but was obvious looking at the game yesterday is the bias towards Turlough in County Underage panels. Nearly every one of there team and some subs have been on county panels at minor & U21 contrasting to Loughrea where only a handful were. Huge bias..!

I do wonder about this "hyping " thing in relation to Turlough. WHO is peddling this"hype? I think most hurling people in Galway would have seen them this year and over the last few years as lacking a class forward or 2 and falling short for that reason at least. When I hear all this talk about hype with regard to Turlough it reminds me so much of the way people from other counties often say that the Galway senior hurling team are being hyped. Same parallels with underage success. Im not from Turlough but I imagine if there's hyping going on it's in other people's heads and not their own in much the same way as the hyping with regard to Galway is done by people who are not from Galway! Btw , speaking of decent forwards, they were without Conor Walsh this year. Anyone know the story there ...has he gone travelling , emigrated, or got a long term injury? I hope we'll see him in action again before too long. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 1968 - 01/11/2022 09:02:53 2446087 Link 0 |
I dont think that is fair as regards Turloughmore. They are always successful at underage so naturally they might have a few more players but all the good Loughrea young players have been in the recent panels like Hanrahan, Morgan and Killeen. I dont think anyone has been missed from that Loughrea panel.
