Anyone know if the match can be purchased from sky. Not showing up on their NOW website. Maybe its too soon to be promoted. Samson55 (Wexford) - Posts: 103 - 17/05/2022 13:42:21 2418113 Link 0 |
The compromise system sounds good. The system pre covid was the way it was but it was felt by many that the standard of our club championships would be raised by having a split season. As regards Leinster none of the clubs that has ever won a Leinster Senior club Hurling title has ever won a Senior club county football title apart from Rathnure in 1972 and St Rynaghs over 75 years ago and only Buffers Alley, St Rynaghs and Cuala have even won Intermediate club football titles and only a few of these either. So the Leinster Championship does not favour dual clubs in any county not just ours. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16823 - 17/05/2022 13:56:58 2418121 Link 0 |
Not likely but possible keep the faith.

You buy a day pass for the entire Sky Sports package (think it costs €10), and that should be showing up all right. It's not like buying a stream for an individual match. You can buy the day pass any time you like this week - it won't actually take effect until you start watching something on one of the Sky Sports channels. But just beware that means if you buy it today and then decide to click in just to be sure it's working, the 24-hour clock starts immediately, and it'll run out tomorrow - so you'd have to buy a new pass on Saturday then as well! I know GC aren't that successful compared to Kieran's but they do out-perform Peter's relative to their player base. Out of the Wexford starters last Saturday, there were 7 Peter's players compared to 1 GC player unless I'm mistaken. When you then consider that the only KK player who went to GC last Saturday was Walter Walsh (Unless I'm mistaken again), it would make you think that the Peter's should be beating GC more often than not in the hurling. And I suppose this is my main point: I think the Peter's should be doing better than they are. As a side note, Enniscorthy CBD should be hurling Senior A every year as well, they have the players for it

I don't think this particular Wexford side is capable of winning an AI but I don't see what's wrong with people aiming for AI titles. You can't get top-class results without aiming high in the first place. And our past record doesn't define how we will do in the future. I think Richie McCarthy told a story once about when all the Limerick players were coming though and he said coming into a big game "Wouldn't it be great if we were to get a win here and then go on a good run in the Championship?" And then Tom Morrissey turned around to him and said "That attitudes not good enough, we're not here to possibly have a good year, we're here to win!" Being defeatist about Wexford hurling gets us nowhere, it only makes things worse. We need to aim to dominate like Limerick right now. Sure, we might fail but that's the sort of mindset champions need and have

I would regard that as possible unfortunately

That's a terrible attitude. Sure that's what it's always been and will be forever will it! As a fanbase we have every right to call out and ask questions as to why things aren't getting better. Everyone who has an interest in Wexford GAA from fans to the county chairman should require high standards. We've won more all Ireland's than most of the country. Only the big 3 and Limerick have won more. We've produced one of the greatest players ever to play the game. The first county to ever win 4 in a row in football. I think people outside and even worse within forget the history of Wexford GAA. We've alot going for us. We've a population of 150,000 people. Hurling and football are the most popular sports in the county and we constantly underperform due to in my opinion a lack of ambition and mis-management. Liam Griffin said that when he grew up he seen Wexford compete in almost half of the all Ireland finals in his younger years. 26 years since we've been in one now. I don't have the answers but what we've been doing is not good enough Finchfurlong996 (Wexford) - Posts: 255 - 17/05/2022 15:06:21 2418161 Link 0 |
No reason why Wexford can't do it. If they could find a wealthy benefactor that would obviously help, like it helped Limerick. Surely there's one out there!

No bother. Happened to get Sky Sports on NOW TV on a deal of €10 a month for three months at the beginning of April myself. Loaned one of my NOW TV sticks to my father (aged in his 80s), as he wouldn't have been at either the Galway or Dublin games in Wexford, so he got to watch them then anyway. He'll get to watch the Kilkenny match this week too, and then I'll cancel the Sky Sports offer before it starts to renew monthly at full price. All a side issue here, of course, but reason I mention it is to part explain why I never have any time for the people who complain it's terrible that matches are on Sky Sports, "especially for the older people who have no way of watching it". It's not that difficult or even that expensive for them or anybody else to watch, if somebody would just help them out with one of the many ways available. Since when does being a dual club only count for senior titles? By your metric sure there would only be 7 dual clubs in Wexford if senior is all that matters!! tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1550 - 17/05/2022 16:06:40 2418185 Link 0 |
100% agree. But all we get is the excuses, "ah shur, (insert some excuse here" tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1550 - 17/05/2022 16:10:28 2418186 Link 0 |
I didn't say that's the way it will forever be but it has been for a long time and is the case now as well. We should definitely aim for higher and strive for it but people have to be reasonable. And I do think we are getting better, When is the last time we had a run of form like this? Senior and Minor Leinster title in 2019, A whisker from a Leinster final and possible win again last year. Beating all the top teams in the league this year. We are getting better as far as I'm concerned. This is the best team we've had in nearly 20 years but we're still a way off the top teams. Hopefully some U20s can step up over the coming years and we can push on again. Just the attitude here and around the county seems very negative and defeatist after the Westmeath draw. A game we should and could have won.

Dead right. I'm not a fan of the "blame the county board" mantra some peddle on here. What needs to be asked is where are we lacking, what specific improvements can we make. There's a Japanese concept of Kaizen which Toyota used to optimise their manufacturing process. Small, incremental improvements and every week/month asking what can we do better. Clubs are often good at blaming anyone they can. Instead, they need to be thinking "where are we weaker than the best" and act on it. Never mind blaming referees, co. board, or whoever. If at all possible get Henry Greensmith's book 'Unlimited Heartbreak'. It is the ultimate manual in how a County Board should not run their business, in a period ranging over several decades. I lived through much of that period and there a few examples of gross bad decisions, made by the County Board, he did not even mention. No wonder we were down for so long. Having said all there are problems in several counties. Only in the pub, last Sunday, before the match, in a chat with people from Clare, Limerick and Cork, similar stories of absurd goings on over the years were discussed. Awful Stuff.

GOOD COUNSEL COLLEGE: M Kirwan; G Porter, E Whelan, R Delaney; B Reid, C M Foley (0-1), L Murphy; P McDoinald (0-2), M Dundon; G O'Connor (0-1), J Redmond (0-9, 0-8 frees), E O'Brien (0-2); E Lyng, D Glennon (1-0), C Byrne (0-6). Subs: M Murphy (0-1) for Dundon; A O'Grady (0-1) for O'Connor; C Parker for Redmond; S Nunan for Byrne; C Phelan for Glennon. This is the Counsel team that won the Leinster A final earlier this year. Some top Wexford players there. And I think 8 or 9 Kilkenny lads. Might be worth checking to see how many were on Kilkenny and Wexfords minor and u20 teams this year. I agree we have been suffering a chronic lack of genuine belief since I started watching in the early 90s with the obvious exception of 96 when Griffin got what was a team that narrowly lost out through the early 90s over the line. Yes in the 50s and 60s we had a great team, and 2 decades of great success kickstarted by 1 of the greatest players to play anywhere ever. We won 4 all Irelands in that time. In the 70 years previous we won 1. The same as Laois and Kerry. And in the 50 years since we have only won 1. Less than the big 3 and Galway, Offaly, Limerick, and Clare. We started at a pretty low base 10 years ago and are now pretty consistently competitive in League and Championship. We have only lost one championship game this year and that by only a single point. And we should of won it. Last year we lost to Clare by 3 after giving them a 10 point headstart and probably should have beaten Kilkenny in normal time. Ignoring 2020 when the season was all messed up by covid and all our hurling panel bar a couple were involved in an intense football championship for 2 months leading in to the intercounry hurling, in 2019 we won Leinster and were very close to getting to an AI final against a team we had beaten and drawn with already that year. We are ever so close. As close as we have been on a consistent basis since the early 90s. And all despite having no AI underage success in over 50 years. So it's disappointing to hear some of the criticism of players and management on this from lads who have no right to expect as much as they seem to. We are still some way off winning u20 AIs I think. Limerick, Tipp, Cork have won multiple AIs at that grade in the last 7 years and Waterford won the other 1. So why would anyone EXPECT us to be winning Senior All Irelands? We are close for sure. Closer than we have been in near 30 years. But not there yet.
