All Stars Hurling 2021

(Oldest Posts First)

It's not far down the road that the all stars will be announced. Normally there is a decent sharing of the all stars around the competing countys in particular semi finalists and finalists. Just wondering what people's thoughts are this year.

Limerick will have a say in nearly all positions. Players like Eoin Murphy, Conor Prunty, Calum Lyons, Padraig Walsh, Jamie Barron, Jack o Connor, Eoin Cody, Tony Kelly, Patrick Horgan will all have some merits to be included.

I think limericks performances in croke park this year in semi and final could see them win a record haul( I think 9 is the most from any county if I'm not mistaken).

The only awards which count are All-Ireland medals. An All Star award is either the icing on the cake or else a consolation prize.

I'd have no issue with them getting 13 awards with just Donovan and hegarty missing out. I can't see any case for the other 13 not getting one.
Also, you can be sure the all stars means a lot to players and rightly so.

Useless exercise anymore. Moving players to positions to make room for someone else. Pick the players for the position they have been named in the most times. If the manager chooses to move players all over the place thats his prerogative and saying there are no set positions now does not cut it either. Teams are still named in the traditional positions for a game. The ways things are gone if there is no room for the full back he could be named full forward. That may be extreme but why not if it is done all over the field.

A friend of mine was saying in Aussie Rules they have a "Best and fairest" award - should the GAA have something like this?

Is it a single award or for a team?

The All-Stars lost a lot of credibility in the 90s when Brian Whelehan wasn't selected in 1994 - and in 1998 was selected but at full-forward. Even though he was never a forward.

Eh I hate to break this to you but Brian Whelehan was switched in to the half forward line in the first half of the 1998 Senior final. He scored two points. In the second half he was switched in to full forward on no less a full back than Pat O'Neill. He scored 1-02 from play and 0-02 from frees. He finished the match which Offaly won with a total of 1-06. Not bad for a man who was "never a forward."

How often has Rowlands been the best goal tender and not got an all star despite it is supposed to be the best players. if the model of picking a player out of position was used in his case he could have been named at corner back. An all star had meaning when you were selected based on being the best player in a position. If that is not feasible anymore then scrap it or try something else. Yes team success benefits a player getting more exposure also inspite of the fact it was not meant to be about who won medals. i hate when our players get all-stars because they will probably go in the tank the next year.

I would prefer if each player playing in the McCarthy Cup had a vote for each of the positions available, without the ability to vote for a player in your own county.

In essence change the awards to a players team of the year.

I know he played as a forward in a couple of later games in 1998 but does playing fullforward for around half an hour in one match only entitle one to be given an All-Star? I can think of plenty players over the years who gave one barnstorming performance in one championship game and still didn't make the All-Star shortlist.

Then again - there could have been a serious shortage of good full forwards in 1998 .....!!

I was at the game John. Brian Whelehan struggled badly on Brian McEvoy early in the game. He had a bad head cold. Rather than take him off he was moved to the forward line from where he had an immense impact on the game most especially when he moved in to full forward in the second half. It was some performance.

Brian Lohan was All-star full back in 96 on the back of that single performance against limerick. That always seemed a bit mad to me.

I will take your word for it then.

Yes. And considering he was on the Limerick full forward Padraig Tobin. He scored 2 goals in the first round against Cork and never scored for Limerick again after that.

And now that I think of it - Gary Kirby was an All-Star in 1991 even though Limerick were knocked out early that year. Sometimes one good performance was enough to get you an award in the past.
