Best Goal Keepers You Seen In Our Lifetime

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Cluxton was a one off and changed the roll, Morgan from Tyrone is prob the bedt currently out there.

From the past Cork had John Kerins and the great Billy, Dublin had Cullen and John O'Leary .. from my own Diarmuid was a late developer due to Declan Keeffe and Peter Leary.

For me and this my opinion, could never look beyond Charlie Nelligen, from sun in 76 to his finsl semi in 91 that's some record and I don't recall he making a mistake.

Meehan's goal against Cork. What a legend.

Obviously I am biased but Damien Fitzhenry by a country mile. He was a hero for all kids my age growing up and blessed to have seen him play in my formative years.

Horsebox77 (Kerry)- Seen Nelligan in action, very good, Martin Furlong was also good and so was Seamus Derby even though I don't think he was a goal keeper!!.

Replying To browncows:  "Cluxton was good at finding his man with kick outs and that was easy as most teams who played against Dublin did not contest the kick out. When put under any sort pressure he could kick over the line, or to the opposition like most other keepers. Being on a good team meant he had less to do in a match. I would say his importance was exaggerated by the media. A very good keeper. Now I think goalkeeping has been taken to another level by Morgan and Beggan -a couple of good examples in the AI and a few good examples in the Tyrone/ Monaghan match when Beggan ran 40m and disposed Mattie Donnelly on the edge of square without fouling him-something most defenders find difficult to do. Both men score more than many of the forwards in most matches."
Morgan and Beggan would probably have more talent than Cluxton. Cluxton shouldn't be under-estimated either though the guy has 7 all-Ireland medals he played a major part in all those wins too, his presence and leadership on a team and panel (the year he retires Dublin lose the all-Ireland semi-final), his longevity to sustain that level of performance so long and his skills of blocking shots, catching dropping balls and his kick-outs all come in to his brilliance, certainly he doesn't have the distance in his kicks that Beggan and Morgan have. Cluxton was on the Dublin panel near enough 20 seasons in that length of time of course there will be a few mistakes but overall I think the guy was a great goalkeeper. But there is still a few more years left in Beggan and Morgan, they could change my mind yet.

8, dualsupport, that's 8 eight all Ireland senior medals for Stephen, all on the field of play.

Replying To HardCase:  "I was never a big believer in the cluxton hubris personally. His dead ball expertise are unquestioned, but then so are dean rocks. Nobody is saying he is the best forward of all time though.
Connaghan (probably spelled incorrectly) from westmeath was a superior all round keeper for example. These guys rarely get a mention though."
Gary Connaughton was brilliant in his day. Pulled many a point off the top of the crossbar and was great at closing forwards down. He was a commanding presence in the box and was constantly communicating to his defense. The all Ireland qualifiers of 2006 took Westmeath to Pearse Stadium against Galway. The talk all week was about Ja Fallon returning for Galway and the form he was in. The first high ball into the Westmeath end Gary comes thundering out takes Fallon and ball out. Ja wobbled off the field being linked by two people. Westmeath beat Galway after extra time.
