Football All-Stars And POTY

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Who do we think is going to get All-Stars this year? Obviously depends massively on the final which hasn't been played yet.

Finding it very hard to call myself. Can't pick a full team at the moment, feel free to help fill it in.

Keeper will probably be Hennelly, provided he doesn't make any major errors in final.

Full backs would probably be O'Hora and McKernan at the moment. Can't pick the other position.

Half backs - not a notion really. Maybe Gavin White? Paddy Durcan? McGeary?

Midfield you're probably looking at Matthew Ruane at the moment. Don't know who to put beside him, Maybe David Moran? Doesn't seem to be many stand out midfielders this year.

Up front I'm thinking Ryan O'Donoghue, Darren McCurry and Clifford will probably get one. I'd pick Ciarán Kilkenny in half forward line, scored well from play all championship. Don't know who else. Maybe Meyler? Paddy Small?

I have 5 Mayo lads in there, might be a bit biased.

I made similar thread on potential allstars earlier so feel free t merge admins

Yeah serious competition with defenders this year with most of the star performers for both finalists in defense,
obviously with the caveat that there is always a bolter who picks one up on strength of one good game in final i would be betting on something like this as it stands now. Ruane, Hampsey, Keegan and McGeary all nailed on imo. Id day poty is between mcgeary and ruane going into the final

Hennelly (Mayo)

Keegan (Mayo)
O'Hora (Mayo)
Hampsey (Tyrone)

Durcan (Mayo)
Harte (Tyrone)
Tom o'sullivan (Kerry)

Ruane (Mayo)
Mattie Donnelly (Tyrone)

McGeary (Tyrone)
Ryan o donoghue (Mayo)
Diamruid o connor (Mayo)

McCurry (Tyrone)
Conroy (Mayo)
David Clifford (Kerry)

The all ireland final might change line up but I would gave Ciarán Kilkenny on.

Yeah Ciaran Kilkenny and Mick Fitzsimons the only real dublin contenders in my opinion, if championship were to end now then kilkenny would get one but think he will be squeezed out after the final

If there's the usual 45 nominations I think there'll be quite a few token ones in there to make up the numbers given how short the season's been and that outside of the two finalists, there's a limited number of contenders from other counties.

The list below are those that are realistic contenders IMO based on the championship so far, ones in bold are those that I'd pick currently, final could still change a lot though. Could also see players being shifted between lines to make up the team, particularly around the half back and half forward lines, especially given how difficult it is to tell whether some of the Tyrone players are playing as half backs or half forwards, at times it doesn't look like they have a half forward line at all, certainly not in the traditional sense anyway.

Goalkeepers

Robbie Hennelly (Mayo)

Full Backs
Michael McKernan (Tyrone)
Padraig Hampsey (Tyrone)
Padraig O'Hora (Mayo)
Lee Keegan (Mayo)
Mick Fitzsimons (Dublin)
Tom O'Sullivan (Kerry)

Half Backs
Patrick Durcan (Mayo)
Stephen Coen (Mayo)
Peter Harte (Tyrone)
Conor Meyler (Tyrone)
Frank Burns (Tyrone)
Gavin White (Kerry)

Midfield
Matthew Ruane (Mayo)
Brian Fenton (Dublin)
David Moran (Kerry)

Half Forwards
Diarmuid O'Connor (Mayo)
Mattie Donnelly (Tyrone)
Kieran McGeary (Tyrone)
Ciaran Kilkenny (Dublin)
Sean O'Shea (Kerry)
Paudie Clifford (Kerry)

Full Forwards

Tommy Conroy (Mayo)
Ryan O'Donoghue (Mayo)
Darren McCurry (Tyrone)
Conor McKenna (Tyrone)
David Clifford (Kerry)
Daniel Flynn (Kildare)

Of those there's only Hennelly, O'Hora, Ruane, McGeary and Clifford that look to be close to guaranteed for me, definitely still places up for grabs, particularly in the half forward line.

Meyler and Mc Geary and Hampsey are certs. Meyler is a good operator. Kept mc Hugh quiet and done well on Paudi until he got a yellow. Mc Curry deserves one too. Morgan might get one if they win the final.
For Mayo, Durcan, Keegan, Ruane are certs.
Kilkenny for Dublin.
Clifford still gets one. O Shea prob too.

I'd probably have Beggan in goals thought he had a great year in goals. Hennelly apart from the Dublin game done nothing outstanding, but both him and Morgan are still in with a chance of all stars and it will be probably one of those that wins the all star.

Full Back line: O'Hora, Keegan and Hampsey. Possibly both McKiernan and McNamee depending on a good final could win an All Star. Fitzsimons again was probably one of the only Dubs to take credit from the year.

Half Back line: Durcan, Harte and Meyler. I think Meyler has probably been the most underrated player throughout the year for Tyrone and I think should get an All Star, has done brilliant man marking jobs throughout the year, particularly on Paudie Clifford at the weekend.

Midfield: Ruane is going to be there anyway. You could put the likes of maybe Donnelly in there and also I thought that Fenton really stood up against Mayo, but was quite in the games before that. I would actually put in Oisin O'Neill in midfield which might be a bit left field and didn't always play in the midfield, but i thought he had a great year in every game he played in.

Half Forward Line: McGeary, Kilkenny and O'Donoghue. Probably the likes of Paudie Clifford would be unlucky hear but I thought that Kilkenny showed up well against Mayo and tried his heart out and was fighting a losing battle as a lot of the time he didn't have much support around him.

Full Forward Line: McCurry, Clifford and Conroy. The likes of McCarron will be probably one of the unlucky ones to miss out.

The two main contenders for Player of the year so far are Kieran McGeary and Matthew Ruane for me.

Hennelly (Mayo)

O'Hora (Mayo)
Keegan (Mayo)
Hampsey (Tyrone)

Harte (Tyrone)
McGeary (Tyrone)
Durcan (Mayo)

Ruane (Mayo)
Donnelly (Tyrone)

Meyler (Tyrone)
O'Donoghue (Mayo)
Kilkenny (Dublin)

Clifford (Kerry)
McCurry (Tyrone)
McKenna (Tyrone)

Donnelly is difficult to lock-down in one position, but he has been outstanding in general, and could slot in at midfield where there is no clear partner to Ruane (unless Fenton continues his run after his display vs Mayo). McCurry was quiet enough last day out but has been on fire otherwise, while McKenna has been a difference maker as well. A strong final will get him in, win or lose.

Clifford and Kilkenny will get the token award for provincial winners, and the likes of Conroy, Kevin McLoughlin and Diarmaid O'Connor could well supplant others if they star in the final.

I think if Oisín Mullin plays in the final he has to be a contender for a place. One of Mayo outstanding players all year. With a good showing in the final, please God, he might have a shot at POTY.
My biased opinion.

I think it's a bit of craic. Also the final also makes you suffer from recency bias and some players get All-Stars who mightn't actually have been good all season, so it's nice to highlight those who have performed well all season before the event and see how they get on.

Mullin and Ruane have been our 2 best players this year between all the games. O'Hora was excellent against Dublin and decent against galway but barely played before that. Durcan has been solid throughout, not sure he's guaranteed an all star however.

Connor Meyler Tyrone has been outstanding. He's one of the main reasons that Tyrone are still standing.
