Replying To yew_tree:  "I've seen clips of Mountbellew man Val Daly of Galway. Would he have ranked as a great footballer never to win an all Ireland? Seems to be a very accurate centre forward. Won 2 all stars and five Connacht titles."
Daly was class alright!

Replying To slayer:  "Didn't John Taylor get MOTM v Kilkenny in a Leinster championship game one year? Can't remember the year but the score finished something like 4-15 to 1-17 Kilkenny, Taylor had a super game. Difficult to get MOTM on a losing side."
That was in 1984. Taylor had a blinder at wing-back and was in the running for an all-star that year. Laois were very good in the early 80s - Offaly only beat them by a point in 1981 and in a replay in 1982, and they beat Wexford in 1985. If the back door had been in place back then, they probably would have done very well.

Replying To endgame:  "Derek Duggan scored a great goal just before half time. The Meath Keeper hardly saw it. Tommy Dowd was brilliant in the second half for Meath who won by a point. Down beat them in the Final."
It was some goal all right, and before it the dummy on Terry Ferguson to set himself up. From memory that game between Meath and Roscommon in 1991 was a brilliant game of football.

Peter Canavan - 94 - 96 unplayable... he was good in the noughties as well but untouchable back in mid 90s. He also captained tyrone to 2 u21 All Irelands in 91 and 92 and lost the final in 1990, not to mention POY in 1995 after scoring 11 points in AI final

ppl from all over ulster beyond used to come at watch him play for Errigal Ciaran just so they could say they seen him live. Had a couple of titanic tussles with Crossmaglen round the start of the 00's as well

As we call him up here God

To me a great player is a player who can play in any position.
The 2 that spring to mind are Michael Murphy and Jack o Shea.

Ahh Graham geraghty won a all star as a back and forward. Think that proves his versatility.

A few players won all stars in backs and forwards like Graham Geraghty Ger Power Nudie Hughes Paddy Moriarty Seán Lowry. Seanie Walsh of Kerry played Full back centre back midfield half forward centre forward and full forward for Kerry in championship football. Sean Lowry played full back centre back and full forward

Val Daly is the first name that springs to mind

Outside of my own county Maurice Fitz and Mickey linden

Of the current generation I love watching Lee Keegan , Jack McCaffrey and Michael Murphy.

Sean Kelly too but knowing he's from my own club adds this extra feeling of pride when he plays

I think Taylor got sent off (possibly in a club game) that year and it may have cost him an All-Star as those were the rules back then.

Graham Geraghty was outstanding wing back, centre back, wing forward, full forward and corner forward.

1 At underage he won minor All Ireland and U21 All Ireland at centre back 1990 to 1993.

2 Came onto the Meath team 1993 1994 league played centre back for seniors

3 He then moved to wing back in 1994 1995 championship where he won All star

4 He then moved to wing forward 1996 1997 1998 putting in man of the match performances in games like 1996 All Ireland semi final, was best attacking wing forward in the country 1996 97 before Michael Donnellan came on the scene.

5 He then moved to full forward I 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 won All star at Full forward and captained Meath to All Ireland as full forward. Came one of the best forwards in Ireland.

6 Then 2006 2007 2008 and n and off up to 2011 he played Half forward in 2008 and full forward and corner forward

I cannot think of any footballer in the last 50 years who was putting man of the match performance in provicial finals, All Ireland finals, semi finals at wing back, half forward, and full forward. Also got trails with Arsenal and played rugby in AIL League, rugby high level also.

I meant to say I cannot think of any footballer other than Graham Geraghty in the last 50 years who was putting in man of the match performances in provicial finals , All Ireland semis finals and All Ireland finals as a wing back , a wing forward and a full forward.

Sean Lowry was a massive footballer. He understood the role of, and excelled in, every position he ever played in.

Paudie Lynch has All-Stars at mid-field, half-back and corner-back. And as a minor center-forward kicked 2-11 against Cork one year. Lynch was as close to the complete footballer as ever you'll get.
