Replying To Greengrass:  "That often worked against Galway. Very often their first championship match was a match against a team that had already won a provincial title. In the eighties they were the ones who really broke the mould and paved the way for others to follow most notably Offaly. Galway won three titles in the eighties and played in three more finals. They deserve a bit of credit for that."
ah they did for sure, it works both ways I know, but, they had alway an element of surprise by not taking active part until first sunday in August, and they did, particulary in the 80s catch many a team at semifinal stage, so they done alright out of the old system in the 1980s from what i remember, beating Cork in 1985, Kilkenny in 1986, and Offaly in 1988 off the top of my head those games stand out, so they did ok for "entry at semifinal stage" in fairness...

They did well because they were a great team. That has to be acknowledged too.

They had a great team in the 80s Fairplayalways. From 79 to 90 they reached 8 all Ireland finals winning 3 of them! The most successful team in Galways history! One of the most successful from any county that century.

GAA need to scrap this system asap."
It is easy to come on here and shout to scrap the system. What's less easy is to come on here and suggest a suitable alternative. Let's be having it, maroon! It's fine to say Limerick have only played Munster teams. But who should they be playing in the final? Kilkenny perhaps, if it were proper knock-out championship. Where are we going to get these non-Munster teams to play Limerick? They all got a chance, two chances actually, and it was only one team, a Munster team, that took that second chance. No team can complain with a system that gives them a second go.

And also, Limerick certainly won't beat that Cork team out the gate. That's a good Cork team, and is only getting better. It'll go down to the last puck of the ball.

Cork had only won the same number of games as Kilkenny when they played them. They beat Kilkenny and deserve to be in the final. Both Cork and Limerick have won 3 games each. Whoever wins will have won the most games this year and will be deserved champions. Cork were lucky with the byes they got though. Any other team in the Qualifiers except Galway would have had to win more games to get to the final. Waterford have also won 3 games this year but are out.

Oh they had a great team for sure, not saying they hadnt and they were so unlucky some years, just saying coming in at semifinal stage and win one game and your in final, laois, Clare, Waterford etc. often won one game but were still out of the championship 6 weeks before Galway pucked a ball....yes it works both ways I know, they could argue lack of games etc..while not a Kilkenny fan, is it fair winning Leinster, yet lose one game and your gone, get knocked out in your province and you get a second bite at it, also dreadful Waterford having to play 4 weeks in a row, and for what, push the the All Ireland back a week BUT tell the competing counties that the club will still have to be played to time table so if that means the two All Ireland finalists may have to play midweek to catch up, so be it...I cant get all this rushing and for what, to sit idele from next November to to next March with nothing to look at...play it off certainly, but do it fairly...yes, i know if you loose your first round game you make your bed as they say, but I still think after 3 weeks, give all them counties a break, Covid in Tyrone now and they have no option but to at least postpone semifinal...anyways thanks for you replies..its all gone very professional now as in preparation and game time etc...

Cork have made a clean sweep of under age titles in Munster in 2021,in both hurling and football.Cork GAA is cock a hoop at the moment and are very confident of toppling Limerick and winning the All Ireland. You can see it in their body language and utterances.
This will be a monumental challenge for limerick.

Cork hurling won their first All Ireland title at club, minor, U20 and senior levels since 2005 just a few short weeks ago. They haven't won a National League title since 1998. They've qualified for both a senior and U20 final this season. They've won neither yet. Given how small the number of competitive counties there are in hurling the currency in which Cork hurling deals is All Irelands. One All Ireland of any description in 16 seasons is nowhere near enough for Cork. They need to win way more than that. .

I assume you mean in the next few years and not this year? Limerick are streets ahead of Cork right now

I see very little between the teams,we will know in a little over a week.Peter Casey cleared to play is a great fillip for Limerick.
Do you see many Tipp players retiring....Brendan Maher gone, will Paudie continue.Tipp will need to rebuild their defence for the future, who are the likely candidates from recent under age teams.

I agree with this, as we know the county board have neglected under age for years and relied on clubs to just produce players as had happened historically, whilst other counties moved on quicker and developed talent centrally.
Sometimes the size of the county makes this difficult logistically, but in this modern day, should not be a factor.
However, I think the previous poster was talking about the development of under age in Cork over the past 6/7 years, which has seen school level, Feile and young development teams become successful and very competitive, which has been drip feeding through to minor and u20 level over the past 3 to 4 years.

I agree that they had a very lean period by their high standards but they seem to be in a good place right now.
