Dummy Teams And Match Programmes

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Question for posters? Do any of you have a problem with managers naming dummy teams. I do and I think it's disrespectful to the supporters who buy programmes. I know a good friend of mine from Dublin that stopped buying programmes a couple of years ago due to this fact. I think it was Colm Parkinson that said that when a team is named off there are changes made it should be counted as subs used. That would stop the nonsense. I know sometimes there are last minute problems but it's a common theme for a few managers. I never see that great Gael named anymore either "A. N. Other"

I think A.N Other pulled his hammer a few years back and that was it. Bit too fond of the drink and the women was the word on the street.

It has gone ridiculous with the amount of teams doing this and sure numbers mean nothing anymore. I wouldn't like to see it end up with players and squad numbers.
I believe teams should always start numbered 1 to 15. If number 8 can't play the replacement wears number 8.
Have a programme list the full squad. Then before the game as teams are announced jot the number called out to the player called. 1-15 Then the named subs 16-26.

Yes it's gone crazy and the gaa should do something. You buy a programme and it's all wrong. Poor ole An Other. He was a good one. You gave me a good laugh there Bon fair play.

Yes its disrespectful to supporters but not simply those who buy programmes.
It doesnt say a lot for many of the teams managers if they think thus is necessary
the teams should just at start of a competition have to give each player in their 32 man squad a squad number and then the programme lists all 32 or whatever number is in the squad

While there is always changes to teams in other sports. naming dummy teams is a real big issue in GAA in comparison and i dont know why???

Just give players a squad number at start of the year/competition and then just list all 30 or so players in the squad
but it doesnt say much for teams who do this. the mind games is rather pathetic.
just name your team and get on with the game...
dont see teams from many other sports do this kind of thing

I'd imagine some of it has to do with print deadlines. There's been several instances of late - including our own hurlers last week - where changes were required far too late to be changed for the match day programme.

I can't think of any examples where the pop psychology of naming someone at last minute has worked!

Dublin, Kerry and Mayo have all done that at some stage in big games in recent years.

Completely agree CiarraiMick and it is another bugbear of the Davy Fitz era in Wexford. Naming a team on Thursday/Friday night, but then on WhatsApp the real team is leaked and it is about 5 players different.
I can only imagine how a player feels. If I was left off the starting team for a big match, but yet was named on the programme, I would hate to have people wishing me luck, etc - knowing full well I am not starting.
And the other hilarious thing, I bet every opposition manager could name 14 of the Wexford 15 anyway, so why bother?

As you say, make them subs before the match starts and see how quick it changes.

ANOther came on as a sub in Tullamore a good many years ago. Annoying that listed team selections can change on match day.

No problem as long as the players a wearing the same number as they are listed in the programme.

It makes no difference other than that and is just an excuse for people to have a moan at something.

Managements are expected to submit a list of 1-26 on a Wednesday or Thursday night for a match on Saturday or Sunday to allow a programme to be printed. What happens then is the list is released to the media or on social media and everyone assumes that 1-15 is the team named, when in many cases the management probably haven't even picked the team.

Using AN Other was pointless because that meant that the person who was going to fill that spot either wasn't named in the programme at all, or is wearing a different number to the programme list.

I've never seen a premiership soccer team line out 1-11. You cannot expect a manager to pick a list on a Wednesday night and expect them to stick to it come game time. There are loads of reasons why that often isnt possible.

Of course last week was different with Dublin hurlers due to unforeseen circumstances Barney but some managers are naming teams knowing well they are dummy teams. Either stop or else don't print the team on programmes. Just the squad. It's being done on purpose most of the time supposedly to confuse the opposition but the people it really confuses are the supporters.

Well StoreysTash he learned from the master. Ger Loughnane was the original dummy team manager which resulted in the retirement of the series winner A. N. Other. Its very annoying.

If you look at a lot of soccer matches the team is only named an hour before kick off.

Mal O'Rourke at Monaghan was awful for it.

I remember a league a few years ago and he changed about 8 of the team.

Extremely annoying with no advantage

Of course changes can happen but most of the time it's done on purpose. I often saw a team named on a Friday night and listed correct on a programme Sunday. Premiership teams are different as they have squad number like é. g. Beckham at Real Madrid was no. 23.Actually when I was a young lad soccer teams were named number 1 to 12.(12 being a sub) only one sub used and if a goalie got injured a player had to take over. I have often seen teams named on a sat night and 3 or 4 changes on a Sunday. Look everyone p their own but I don't like it and collectors of programmes certainly don't like it.

Yeah and maybe just print the programme with all the panel names on it.

While it's a stupid practice and makes no difference how or why would it affect people buying programmes?
