James O'Donoghue Leaves Kerry Panel

Just reading this story, isnt it strange sport and life, a player who was gracing the game some years ago when he came on the scene first, full of talent and looking like he was going to be a huge name during his career....injuries then happen and form goes and we see him withdrawing from the panel ahead of Munster final...doesnt it go to show how up and down sport can be, and the stars of today better make the most of it while they are there at the top of their game...their are no guarantees for anyyone...I wish James well and hopefully injuries will ease and we will see him grace our stadiums again with the talent he undoubtedly has..

Very good post, nothing to add other than I'd also want O'Donoghue to find a way back. He was a fantastic player during that 2014 season.

A great player I thought he was going to be Kerry's main attacking threat for years, some talent coming through down there now. I wish him all the best whatever way it goes for him.

Yes poor James has struggled with injuries since getting player of the year in 2014.He looked to be flying against Dublin in the lwague last year in croke park kicking 3 points from play in the first half and causing havoc but alas went off injured again. Hope everything works out for him.

Certainly borderlined being a super player, unfortunate injuries, I think some Kerry folk reckon he could have a little more of the divil in him, but on song an serious player.

Martin McHugh has just fallen off his chair in disbelief

Great player who never reached his absolute potential due to injury. He was his All Ireland though. Every club in Ireland has players who could have made a name for themselves but injury put a stop to that. Sport is cruel.

Sorry for him but as another poster says he has his all Ireland, big loss to kerry and the game as a whole, but it is what it is. Injuries sometimes can't be helped.

Surprised to read about this. Fantastic talent; but in my head he was still about 25 - where does time go

He'd have a right drop so. Sure wouldn't he still be using the booster seat.

such a talented player. I would say the best of his generation. I didn't even know he was still on the panel. He was one of those players you would gladly pay money to see playing.
they are a rare breed. Maurice Fitz, Matt Connor, Colm Cooper, Peter Canavan, Matty Forde, Ciaran McDonald, Jamie Clarke.

Had to be one of the strangest comments when McHugh compared him to the '2 trick pony' Gooch.
Sad to see what injuries did to him after his bright start.

Best of luck to the lad if he is retiring. More to life than football and GAA.

Terrible that a player with such talent was so plagued with injuries. Very. exciting. to watch. He had some turn of speed when he was at the height of his powers.

And you have Con C'Callaghan, Bernard Brogan, Diarmuid Connolly, Brian Fenton, Ciaran Kilkenny , Jack McCaffrey, etc etc. to name a few more.

I think the generational thing suggests he might have been talking about past players no longer playing at any level? There's no mention of the championship's all-time top scorer, top points scorer and top goals scorer, but he's not finished yet either.

James was very unlucky with injury but at least got that medal in 2014. I remember the goal in the drawn semi-final v Mayo when Donaghy knocked it down to him and he instantly shot with a back leaning into him through a space between the goal post and a defender on the line which was barely wider than the ball. That goal drew the game bar one more point and was some execution with zero margin for error. Such a pity that year was his high point but it was a very high point.

I'd add Michael Meehan to that group as well, natural footballers.

Best of luck to James, hope all is ok with him given the suddenness of his departure at this time. Maybe we will see him again if not he finishes a career after achieving more then most.

A great athlete with pace to burn who could also turn on a sixpence. The standout player of 2014. Not sure where he would slot in on the Kerry team now though which coupled with his injury problems probably forced his hand. Timing is a bit odd though with the Munster final just around the corner. Hopefully he can continue playing for his club. All the best to the lad.

Best of luck to him in his retirement - a great talent.
I'd be adding Michael Donnellan to that list of gifted natural footballers. And we're seeing the emergence of one of the future greats with young Clifford.
