Westmeath V Kildare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Not much talk about the other Leinster SFC semi-final on Sunday.

Westmeath have scored 3-45 in two games, against Cork and Laois, which is impressive. Ray Connellan, John Heslin and Ger Egan as good as you get in the country.

Kildare weren't overly impressive in beating Offaly and seem to have disciplinary issues. Two red cards in their last few games and need to be winning here if they are serious about staying in Division 1 next year.

Westmeath get the nod from me. But not by much I'd say.

Heslin, Egan, Ronan O'Toole all top class. Really don't understand all the fuss about Connellan. Lucky to still be starting after league performances and Laois game imo.

Dont think there is much between the teams, Westmeath very impressive v Laois, also good performances v Meath and Mayo, We are dominating possession in games and are much more controlled in our play under JOC, We are a lot better defensively also, We are not putting up big scores however and that is leaving every team we play in with a chance, We havent been missing chances just not getting defenders or midfielders forward apart from kevin flynn to add to the scoreboard, To win I think our defenders will have to hold the Westmeath forwards and I think they are good enough to do that, Kildare by 1 or 2

I'd agree with that. Westmeath are going very well. I doubt they'd have been relegated in a normal league year and looked quite impressive albeit in defeat against Cork.

They've been able to put up some serious scores and have good forwards.

I think this game will tell a lot about where Kildare are at. Croke Park hasn't been the happiest of hunting grounds. I think Kildare are just about good enough to continue the upward trajectory.

Don't think there'll be much in it. Not sure Westmeath have the same kind of bench strength and with the heat tomorrow the subs will be a big factor. With Daniel and Luke Flynn, Sullivan, Mc Cormack and Brophy etc on the bench I would hope it gives us the edge.

Appetiser before the main course… it's the only competitive match on the card

Kildare defence looks like it has tightened up and they had a game v Offaly. Westmeath havent really had a game yet but it's good to see them going well.

Should be a good game but if I am honest I don't care who wins as the massacre that awaits the winner in the final won't be pretty.

No massacre awaits the winner, - watch this space.

"Westmeath haven't really had a game yet"? We have played three of the same teams as ye in Laois, Meath & Cork as well as Mayo and Down. We beat Laois handy and the others were all tight affairs that could have went either way.

I'd give Westmeath the slight edge heading into this.

Bit more momentum with them after a bigger win against Laois and they've been knocking up some big scores.

Narrow defeats in all their league games and the only game they lost by more than a score was the Cork game I believe.

Don't think many in Kildare would have expected us to get promoted to be fair but at the same time after the league it almost feels like the main objective has been achieved for the year.

We've been building up big leads in games but fade away a bit after the 2nd half water break, at the same time though we seem a bit more savy with lads making smart fouls and taking a yellow or black card at the right time to slow the game up and hold onto a lead.

With the form the Westmeath forwards were in the last day against Laois though I think they might have enough to edge it. If Dan Flynn is fit enough to be on the bench that'll be a help.

2 or 3 points in it either way but I'd expect Dublin to get stronger as the summer goes on so unless Meath can spring a surprise today it'll be a heavy defeat waiting for whoever wins this one.

Just in Croke Park now for the first time in over two years. Looks spectacular. I'm a little emotional here.
