As a Galway supporter, I'm naturally anxious about most games we play and today even more so. We absolutely have the ability to win, but likewise we can't say we'd be totally surprised if we're out of the championship this evening. This has the makings of a right good game. Of course the Rossies well capable of winning and it's on in "The Hyde" but ultimately its the championship where Joyce and Galway will be judged so I have a slight fancy for Galway.

There's a good 20 to 22 points in that Galway starting 15 today I feel, not sure Roscommon can match that but if Galway lose today I'd say Joyce is gone. AfricanGael (UK) - Posts: 1947 - 04/07/2021 12:39:01 2355969 Link 0 |
Think Roscommon will win by 3 or, 4 has to be a big game in them this year. If Shane Walsh is out as speculated Galway have no chance, he's a fantastic forward. JimmyNail (Leitrim) - Posts: 182 - 04/07/2021 13:04:56 2355973 Link 1 |
Weather isn't helping, lot of missed chances so far, poor shot selections, RTE commentary is a bore fest as usual. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2739 - 04/07/2021 13:29:47 2355978 Link 1 |
Excellent display of puke blanket defence football! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2192 - 04/07/2021 14:03:08 2355989 Link 1 |

Fairly brutal to watch. Can't see Galway causing Mayo any problems. Forpucksake (UK) - Posts: 130 - 04/07/2021 14:56:47 2356000 Link 2 |
Brutal stuff all round, especially from Roscommon. They must not have got the memo that the days of playing all out defence are dead, and you won't win anything playing that way. It doesn't even keep the scores down these days, the better teams will still find a way to break through and rack up a score - and Galway weren't even impressive today to be honest, but they still got 2-11 against a very defensive system. patk (Monaghan) - Posts: 936 - 04/07/2021 15:02:14 2356003 Link 0 |
At least Galway footballers won, not like their hurlers yesterday. Well, that shouldn't come as as surprise, since it's always been more of a footballing county anyway, with almost twice as many AI senior titles (9) in the big ball game compared to a mere 5 in hurling. Stick with the big ball, I say! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1903 - 04/07/2021 15:07:07 2356005 Link 2 |
Galway are a young team who'll improve. They'll definitely test Mayo in Castlebar.

Roscommon got exactly what they deserved for employing such a horrible defensive system… woeful stuff to watch…

Maybe Frankie might focus on his own house a little more in future. Roscommon are poor to say the least. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7885 - 04/07/2021 16:29:47 2356038 Link 3 |
They'll need a healthy Shane Walsh though. I hope he is ok.

if he is missing it won't be the disaster some believe it to be. Sean Kelly would be captain and there are other free takers. He was well held by Stack today truth be told

Shane gave us breathing room numerous times though by carrying the ball and drawing tacklers, creating a few scores. That was with an existing hamstring twinge, which he was trying to mind. He's unrivalled as a ball carrier in close contact, with his balance, pace and skill. That type of ability at worst makes space for others. At his best, he's unmarkable. He took the right option most of the time today, which was very good to see. He walked off, do it's definitely not a full tear. Hopefully it's minor enough to get him back for the final. On the game itself, we did what was needed, but again a lack of ruthlessness could come back to bite us. We were quite lucky to get the 2nd goal as a couple of bad handpasses looked to have lost the opportunity. That goal was crucial. The lads showed great effort and did a lot of things well. It wasn't easy to look good out there in those conditions and against a setup like that. Another big positive is Comer getting a full game. He needs minutes to get his sharpness back. We'll definitely need to improve again for the Connacht Final, but today was a step in the right direction. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2034 - 04/07/2021 20:05:14 2356196 Link 3 |
Happy enough. Galway showed a lot of fight, work rate and a willingness to win dirty ball. Seemed to be a huge amount of water on the pitch so that needs to be taken into account when assessing quality. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1826 - 04/07/2021 21:03:21 2356243 Link 1 |
Ahh but he's a fine player. I'd hate to see him not play. Especially in a year where there's no back door.
