write off Mayo and they will win, give them a chance and they might win, make them favourites and they will get a hammering. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 404 - 20/06/2021 20:23:16 2352222 Link 0 |
Some teams are at a very similar level and are hard to separate, anyway this is what I think post Covid, hopefully mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1044 - 20/06/2021 22:38:23 2352253 Link 0 |
This isn't 2006 lad. Mayo don't take hammerings or did you miss all the games against Dublin who have been tanking everyone else for years?

Can hardly agree with that Jack... Mayo have been favourites more often than not over the past decade when playing everyone bar the Dubs and sometimes Kerry and thankfully no hammerings. We got soundly beaten in the second half of the 2019 semi-final by the Dubs and Kerry gave us a decent beating in the super-8s the same year, hence the team rebuild since. But Mayo have consistently performed since Horan first took the reins in 2011 irrespective of the bookmaker's odds.

What about that hammering down in Kerry a couple of years ago. Does that not count? You could say the 2012 final was a bit of a hammering with the actual scoreline flattering Mayo at the end.

Aw now Cavan and Tipp should be higher than that, we'll have to agree to disagree

At a stretch the highest I could put them would be over Laois/Westmeath and below Limerick/Down Offaly. If they played any of the teams above them tomorrow I would bet against them. Victorious87 (Wicklow) - Posts: 597 - 21/06/2021 10:33:00 2352296 Link 1 |
link We haven't been hammered for a while but a 1 point loss is still a defeat. I think there's definitely truth in us being better with the underdog tag though. We need a Jim McGuinness type of character in the management instilling self belief in all the squad including the management and think forward, not dwelling on past failures but working on ways to prevent them happening again and closing out games. Anyways, a good excuse to post full coverage of 2006 semi final, including the mill (bunfight) on the hill, analysis not on the DVD, plus Sunday Game highlights. You picked out one game in over 10 years. Another Donegal account popping at Mayo. You could say the 2012 final was a hammering. Nah you couldn't, seeing as it wasn't good man.

There was nothing on the line for that game in Kerry. We still qualified from the super 8s in the end.

I was merely pointing out a counter argument to a poster saying that Mayo don't take hammerings, not since 2006. 2012 All Ireland final was over after 10 minutes.

The game was over after 10 minutes.

In fairness the game was over once the second goal went in.

Losing by 10 points against Dublin in 2019 is certainly a hammering too.

It seems that people point that out once they know they have been rightly called out. What has me having multiple accounts got to do with you making stuff up by saying Mayo never get hammered. Truth is they were hammed by Kerry a couple of years ago and whether you like it or not they were beat after 10 minutes in the 2012 final. In saying that, I do feel sorry for you Flaker. You may never see Sam on Mayo soil in your lifetime unless the Dubs go on a nationwide trip around Ireland hitting all the counties that never get the opportunity to bring Sam to the county.

You're surely a Kilkybegs fisherman Murph or out that direction? Looking to add Mayo catch to your range to accompany the Donegal catch. Effectively it was over after those two goals. I was in the Hill and got a good look at them. McGuinness had spotted a weakness and this was a game plan, well rehearsed, for them to get goals early. I don't think that was the winning of it though. What won it for ye was that McGuinness had ye so focused and calm that ye kept us at arms lengths and if we came within 3 or 4 points ye'd go back up the pitch and tack on a score. Not a bit of panic from any Donegal player on the day.
