Intercounty Players Who Had One Or Two Good Seasons And Then Just Disappeared..Both Codes

Was looking back at National Leagues from 1980s and 1990s...few names came to mind reading through...Pat Cleary (Laois) Martin O'Shea (Galway) Michael Haverty (Galway) Pat McCarthy (Limerick) Micky Mullins Cork) and a Stephen Dwan (I think) from Tipperary in 1990s's and Anthony Crosse (Tippeary)...I wont go into the football equivalents so feel free to add in those you remember and why...and what became of them after (in a good sense of course!)

just a fairly recent one in football came to mind..Martin Dunne of Cavan..he was on fire before the game with Armagh and the row pre match over the parade...I believe his arm was broken in that scuffle which is a disgrace regardless of who started it...he has never been the same player since that the limited bit I saw of him since anyway...

The sooner we get back to playing football the better.

I agree..everyone to their own...some people are very interested in various aspects of GAA not just current teams and players...nothing wrong with going back a bit...

Richard Murphy or Richie Flynn? He's still hurling with Rathnure but never made the county senior team.
Likewise, Mick O'Hanlon is still playing with Horeswood but never made senior team either.

Jack Guiney was a savage loss to Wexford...Lordy me I seen him hurl and he had it all as far as hurling and ability and fitness etc...I know there were issues with Liam Dunne as Managher, and I know personally that is a tough situation for both sides in the situation...the manager is a tricky one..you might not like them but you have to live with them and some people just cannot do that and may not have the personality to do it either..but he done a season or 2 and I think may have became a parent (not sure so sorry if I am incorrect) and add that into the fold and its more difficult again...he was one of the best underage I ever seen in any time...theres an O'Connor chap either as on of George/James/John not sure which and he is some hurler too..

WIthout checking officially I thought it was RIchard Murphy isnt it amazing how then they just dont have the drive or the mindset to step on to senior...I was the same..I hurled upto 26 and with a strong club couldnt even make match day subs but went a panel member and got ocassional challenge game 5 minutes at end to keep me quiet:)..I went to school with lads who were as good as what Offaly had in the 1990's and they just opted out oftten over petty things like being taken off at half time (If only I had that delema) and such talent is just lay to waste and lads (such as I and thousands more like me no doubt) keep going hoping and hoping and eventually you just realise thats its..too old for such commitment and no game time etc..

There was a young fella from your own county called Michael Cordial ( Shinrone?) and I often wondered what happened to him. He gave a brilliant display as a minor in Croke park albeit on a losing side ( I think)

I think Anthony Crosse got a bad eye injury pre helmet days. Fine player.

Pat Mccarthy (Kerry). Pat won an all ireland midfield for Kerry in 75 and was outstanding. Brilliant v Cork in 76 also but went downhill then after that. A very strong man and a good fielder. A man that put Brian Mullins on his ass with a shoulder(not many did that). Played with Kildare afterwards and ended up as a Kildare selector under Micko Dwyer. Mark Davoren (Dublin) showed great promise but struggled with injuries. Very unlucky.

I agree. 2 great things in life. 1, doing the thing; 2, chatting about it afterwards. Sometimes, for decades afterwards lol. We need games back, but a dull life if we can't chew the fat too

There was a Garvan Mccarthy from Cork who started in either the 03 or 04 Munster final. He just seemed to totally disappear after that. Think he might have scored a goal in the game

Liam Cahill was fantastic for Tipp in 96 when he won an all star, I don't ever remember him making as big a contribution there after. He was a sub in 2001 for the all ireland .

Graham Reilly had a couple of fairly good seasons after making his championship debut then fell away sharply

Dicky Cordial as he was known locally was from Shinrone..sort of Tipperary side of Offaly but very much Offaly...he hurled on with Shinrone after leaving Offaly fold..not sure why he went..just googled him there ant it was mid 2000's he was at his peak..he had some engine alright......he came when the late 1990s team was retiring and his was a journey through the wilderness unfortunately like many Offaly lads since..
