Replying To 97Cavans:  "Great game enjoyed watching it again today. That Down team were a class act and possibly could have won more had they not played in such a competitive era. Grey Blaney was a train at centre forward he got through an unbelievable amount of work and was probably Downs most important player"
What an era for Ulster football. That Down team in particular but also the Derry team of the time could have went on to win 3 or maybe more All Ireland's in a row if they arrived in a less competitive era or if a back door was in play at the time. If there was a back door it's likely Ulster would have been providing three of four All Ireland semi finalists every year in the early 90's. The fact the top four teams of the day were based in Ulster was unbelievable, even Armagh got to a national final in that era.

Talk of why Dublin didn't win that final, the reality is if Dublin were based in Ulster during that era they'd have been nowhere near an All Ireland final and many would argue if they'd have been in an Ulster final. Tyrone posters would argue strongly if Dublin won 95 fairly, I don't think any province will provide that level of strength ever again, it was a freak era.

Derry did land a national league or 2 around then, and Tyrone were close.

However, let's not forget Dublin had to get past a serious Meath outfit in the years they did win Leinster in the early 90's.

And Kerry were having an unusually lean period until '97 when Maurice Fitzgerald got his 1st medal.

But aye, it's all history now and remains my favourite era.
