Larry McCarthy will take over as GAA president tomorrow (Feb 27) republicofcloone (Leitrim) - Posts: 375 - 26/02/2021 08:57:51 2332784 Link 0 |
Horan refused to Deal with the bullock in the room so didn't achieve anything really. He was poor in my opinion but I wish them both luck. It's all very concerning and they should do one isn't it.

Larry Mccarthy should be interesting. He has a background in sports management and marketing. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2763 - 26/02/2021 09:37:49 2332790 Link 0 |
Good luck to the new President! The GAA is a 32 county body and an organisation for ex pats around the world, and I think this more than ever will be acknowledged which is a good thing. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 26/02/2021 10:51:23 2332801 Link 2 |
Never taken issue with any of the GAA presidents really but was no fan of Horan. Flip flopping, saying it and taking it back. Sending mixed messages etc. However wish him no ill well only the best. Hopefully the new man will have good leadership skills.

I think you make some great points there. The split season worked well in 2020 mainly because the club game stayed within the county boundaries. That won't be satisfactory longterm unfortunately even though its the only way I see the split season played over the calender year working. The intercounty game is what brings in the revenue. Its what the vast majority of gaa fans are interested in and are willing to put their hand in their pocket to see. Therefore there will be little if any change to those structures going forward in terms of game reduction. Even the much maligned national leagues are significant revenue streams for the GAA both at County board and national level. Even with the intercounty game ending on the second Sunday in August its still very tight to finish the club championships to All Ireland level by mid December. What people often forget when discussing the club game is how many dual players there are to accommodate. It really is the elephant in the room. In my opinion we will eventually come to a position where the club championships will largely be played without the intercounty players. They will slip in and out when available but the championship will go on with or without them. We are a few years away from that decision mentality wise but we will get there we have to to save the club game from itself. The mentality where its okay for 20+ players to wait around all summer for 1 or 2 is not sustainable. Neither is it sustainable to flog our elite players to death with games all year without rest. Something has to give and this is the only way to fit it all into the one calender year and keep the players at home during the summer. The new President's day job is interesting in the context of marketing the GAA.Will he attempt to improve the product as in competions or will he continiue with the old and failing especially at senior intercounty football level? It will be very interesting to hear and see what he has in store for accomplishing during his tenure.

Thanks and you also make some good points! However whilst clubs will ultimately have to proceed with leagues and secondary competitions without their county players, I don't ever see this being the case for the club championships. I think the momentum to have a split season is well down the road, and you could see club leagues starting around March, and the end of those competitions and club championships having county players sometime post July. My point is, if the inter county season finished too early or is diluted too much, especially at the start of university holidays/post exams then it opens the door for those players to take a two month working holiday in the US or London and who could blame them! You then lose the reason for diluting the inter county season. An early end to the inter county season in Ireland could open up great opportunities for the US/London championships, and provide those championships with big crowds, exposure and good marketing potential. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 26/02/2021 20:09:30 2332841 Link 0 |

Missed a trick in not getting Burns in whom certainly would have taken on those elephants in the room which is why he ultimately failed getting the desired backing. Good luck to McCarthy don't much about him but hoping he is an improvement on Horan which shouldn't be hard which says what I thought of him. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2782 - 02/03/2021 00:05:32 2333243 Link 3 |
i do be bemused by all the fuss about who is president, no more than county board chairmans, this is Ireland and alot of regimes are already embedded in both GAA governing bodies and indeed county boards, and it makes change very very difficult, I know some changes can occur but it alwasys seems like pulling teeth, outside a few on here, who could reel off the last 5 or 10 GAA presidents..I couldnt go back 3 or 4 let alone that many, yet its a huge thing for debate every time it comes up...if anything, they are nearly better known after when they are no longer GAA president...everyone to their own, but the world will still be spinning tomorrow (and GAA will still go on) regadless of who the President is, absolutely no disrespect to the man or woman who does take over..I am sure they do alot of work we dont see and all that...

Is Larry moving to Ireland or will he continue living in New Jersey? All the best to him. Seems like a decent fella. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 02/03/2021 17:18:53 2333325 Link 2 |
it goes to show how important most GAA followers on here think of who gets President, this post had died a death literally... Fairplayalways (Offaly) - Posts: 1034 - 08/03/2021 15:21:16 2333710 Link 0 |
It can't be literal as one of these thread forums are an inanimate virtual piece of coding. So you're wrong sugar

Agreed. Burns would have been a breath of fresh air, particularly after the unmitigated disaster that Horan was. McCarthy is taking on an Association far different to the one that he won the election for just 12 months ago. People have finally tired of soundbites and empty gestures that every President since Sean Kelly have ran on.
