Replying To avonali:  "There was a time when we cherished qualities like. restraint and self-effacement. Cluxton in no show man- but he is a footballing genius who behaves in a. dignified and humble way in victory.. Standing up on the podium like Galvin, as if the whole celebration was about him without a thought for the defeated team looking on or doing. a jig a la Tadgh Kennelly is not his style and I for one am gratefeul for that."
Kerry people aren't jigging much these times!

Replying To avonali:  "I think Cluxton has amply demonstrated that you can enjoy your victory in a quiet , dignified way. He wouldn't enjoy getting on a podium and acting the ginnet."
Cluxtin should have left philly give the speech as he seemed to have plenty to say at half time in the tunnel, very dignified for sure.

some captain should get up and give 3 of the most condescending "hip hip horray losers" and see what people say.

I think the speeches are worth it for the few that are truly memorable.

Anto Daly in 1995 and again in the Munster Final in 1997 with "we're no longer the whipping boys of Munster" line.
Seán Óg Ó hAilpín's "is fada an turas ó Fiji go Corcaigh agus is fada arís an turas ó Corcaigh go Páirc an Chrócaigh!" was great too.

I don't see how anyone would want to do away with a tradition like them. I can understand that people don't like them but they're hardly so offensive to the ears that you'd want to get rid of them.

People who want rid seem very soft and just want everything exactly as they'd like it. Really weird obsession for some it seems.

Cluxton is the captain- he gives the speech. WE can only speculate what was said in the tunnel.

Ya Avon and we can safely speculate that he wasn't asking O'connor what he was getting for Christmas.

Replying To avonali:  "Stephen is a very clever man actually and doesn't need anyone to script his speeches. Social anxiety is a real issue for many people. I recall several times when the cameras caught Jim Gavin encouraging Stephen after an All-Ireland victory and re-assuring him. Stephen dispenses with the awful obligatory 'Hip hip Hooray' and his speeches are usually terse and economical. It's hard for the losing team to have to stand there and listen but it is part of our tradition. Cluxton has changed GAA football by understanding the importance of kickouts , He has been a fabulous servant to Dublin. He is shy and self-effacing, and remarkably humble. He doesn't need to add speech making to his CV."
100% agree, very decent, grounded, low-key bloke - seen him exiting early once after an AI final win, job done, no time for all the back slapping stuff. Totally understand that. Horses for courses - some people love jumping up and down, roaring and shouting etc. Other people want to get the puck out of there and savour the moment without having to talk pure rubbish to well meaning incoherent people. We're all wired differently, and a lot of these occasions assume everyone is a roaring extrovert.

Yes of course most are rubbish, but still worth keeping. Esp first time a county wins it, be scandalous not to say a few words. Still like Canavan's speech comparing Tyrone to the British army (panic starting in Montrose lol). And Brian Dooher's East Tyrone accent - he spoke half in Irish, half in English - some people near me commented that you couldn't tell when he switched from one language to the other, as, as far as they were concernmed, he was equally hard to understand in either. Let's just be grateful that most confine their efforts to just talking; Murphy at the singing for Donegal was something else : )

Well said Mesamis. If people don't want to listen to speech they don't have to and there have been some memorable speeches like you named and of course Joe Connolly 1980
