Extend The Penalty Box

(Oldest Posts First)

Far too many fouls preventing clear goalscoring opportunities happen at the edge of the box.

Mayo have done this twice today and did it in the last minute of the Galway game too, it's a clear tactic!

The box should be extended past the 13 yard line to the 21 and probably a couple of feet towards each sideline. One way to prevent tactical fouling and would lead to more scores from play too.

I think you have to be careful that penalties aren't given for just a mistimed tackle or when lads are going away from goal. I think you just need a clear rule - once the attacker is within, say, the 21m line, if they are clean through and cynically dragged down rugby style, it's a penalty.

Or 2 points for fouls inside the 20 metre line.

The large parallelogram if that is more terminologically appropriate for you.

Anyways, I don't think there needs to be a whole other rule for referees to remember. Just keep the rule as it is and make the "large parallelogram" bigger. Cynical fouling is a far bigger problem than playings diving to win penalties.

Though it would give even greater opportunities to sympathetic refs to award game-changing soft-as-***** frees to their pet teams when games are finely balanced.

Extend the large parallelogram if you want but then the foul will be committed on it's edge. In any case what's the point when referees ignore clear fouls almost in the small parallelogram as happened v Cavan last night...but if the boot was on the other foot it would have been awarded. The favourite always gets the nod.

I think it's a fair point. Kk done it a few times this year too as did tipp and Dublin in the hurling.
Not sure of the dimensions of it but I definitely think it needs to be widened and brought out another foot or two.
Perhaps winter games is contributing more to the instances also
