Sam Maguire And Liam Mccarthy Cups Will Stay In Dublin

(Oldest Posts First)

John horan fears the prospect of the cups remaining with the champions in both football and hurling this year will lead to excess crowds.

What a load of waffle. If mayo won it for the first time since 1951, or Tipp and Cavan won it and they couldnt bring sam home with them on the bus/train that would be an absolute disgrace. What's the point then ?

Similarly Likerick and particularly Waterford in the hurling.

I'm sure John is following the advice of health officials. It seems a bit harsh but the cup would become the focus of gatherings and I'm sure alcohol would be involved. The possible impact public health has to be considered. Lots of people have made hard and painful sacrifices over the last 9 months. People haven't seen their parents in months-grandparents haven't seen their grandchildren. I think these are bigger and much more painful sacrifices to be honest.

Sam And Liam Staying In Croker!

Whilst the authorities have to do what is required to maintain safety is stopping the All Ireland champions taking the cup home a bit extreme? If Dublin and to a lesser extent Limerick win their All Ireland's it might not be much of an issue as the two cups have been in their communities recently.

However if Mayo or Waterford win the All Ireland; there will be an outpour of pure emotion - now I understand that scares the life out of the GAA authorities but surely people will be sensible. Imagine those teams arriving at their county boundary as All Ireland champions but they're denied the opportunity to walk the cup into the county. Is the plan to keep the cups in Croke Park for months or will they be delivered to the counties in the days/weeks after the final, when the celebrations are more under control so clubs, schools, communities get to enjoy what their heros have achieved?

Wouldn't stress about it, in my experience there are about 3-5 Liams and Sams on the go at any one time, im sure one of them will end up in a coach over whatever county border.

It's almost making it a pure 2020 guarantee that Mayo will win the all-Ireland and have to leave Croker without the trophy once more.

You can understand the reluctance of the GAA administrators to try and limit any risk of social gatherings but surely they could allow the teams bring the cups to their own county grounds on the day after the game and maybe have a socially distant reception for their families or something that can be broadcast online and then take them back.

but admin that is the problem. Outpourings of emotion in Ireland don't happen in a vacuum and there will be alcohol taken. Mass gatherings and euphoria are a heady mix and there is possibility of an outbreak. Outbreaks could lead to illness and death. How many stories have we heard of GAA county championships being celebrated and then an outbreak ensues. It is our health care workers and our vulnerable who will be most adversely affected, Speaking as somebody who has had the virus and who had to phone an ambulance for my wife because her oxygen levels were falling I think I can safely say: you don't want this.
Is it worth the risk??? No way. When the vaccine is rolled out and there is less infection in the community then let the cup be celebrated.

But maccoscair social distancing will go out the window if Sam is brought down to MacHale ParK!!

Sure if the GAA let them off with the Cups there'd be widespread whinging about that too. Can't please everyone.

If Mayo won the All-Ireland, there wouldn't be a factor on earth that would stop people celebrating (not that I imagine this will happen this year after watching the Dubs tonight...)

The trophy is moot and I imagine the same would be true of Waterford hurlers or the Tipp footballers.

If the Dubs win Sam again, does the trophy remain at HQ?

If either win I honestly feel even the gaurds in those areas will be sitting in illegally opened pubs, particularly Mayo. They'd probably become their own republic for a week or two and only the army could shut the pubs. Cup or no cup.

Going on tonight's match it probably won't happen but if it did half the country would be in with them celebrating Dublin losing.

Anyway I'd imagine there will be no team buses this year with everyone driving to the matches in their own (sponsored) cars. It's a long way from when my friend's grandad Seamus O'Malley captained Mayo to the All-Ireland in 1936. He got a lift up and down to the game from a neighbor who had a car and the next day he brought Sam to the school where he taught on the back of his bike in the next village. (He was sponsored by Raleigh Bikes of course)

In the over all context of things this is probably not a big deal and no one will lose too much sleep over it. However does seem a little bit trivial. Why don't the government ban the sale of alcohol until the pandemic is over. That might be more effective in stopping parties that contribute to spreading the virus.

I have to say I found it pathetic that the GAA did not let the McCarthy cup into the Limerick dressing room after yesterday's final win.

Some of the players kissed the cup when they went up to lift it, so maybe that was a good idea not to give it to them !
