Yeah I'd agree Mannion was a huge loss too, Canning is probably dwindling physically while Conor Cooney seems to be gone off the boil completely, opportunities possibly for the likes of Evan Niland and Ja Mannion next year.

For me, there are a number of certainties at this stage, and the rest are up for grabs depending on the final displays stpats1886 (Limerick) - Posts: 39 - 01/12/2020 05:22:21 2317218 Link 0 |
It will really depend on the final and who wins and play well. AI winners generally get around 7 and losers around 4. Only nailed on so far are Hayes, Kelly, Reid, Hegarthy, Bennett. Galway will have to get 1 somewhere as beaten semi finalists with Burke most likely.

TJ Reid or someone? Are you mad? TJ Should be an absolute certainty. Onfor15 (Wexford) - Posts: 524 - 01/12/2020 10:54:21 2317253 Link 1 |
I agree with you, that he has put in the performances to warrant an all-star. However, the panel may go with Tom Morrissey if he has a great final, or give a wing-forward spot to Tony Kelly in order to get him into the team. Personally I think it is fairer to put Tony Kelly corner-forward as (1) he actually lined out there at least once and (2) it frees up the number 12 spot which will be a straight shoot between TJ (odds-on) and possibly Toim Morrissey if he gets 1-4 in the final.

All Stars are always a farce. In 1998 Brian Whelehan Got hurler of the year and didn't get an All Star enough said. gatha (Kilkenny) - Posts: 318 - 01/12/2020 21:40:24 2317482 Link 1 |
Think that was a watershed moment for the process changing, think that was 94 too

Concannon should get in but depends on the final. Both wont get in for the reason you said. Due to Limerick getting to the final, Dan Morrissey may get in ahead of Burke. For the 6 forward positions you have TJ, Hegarty, Morrissey, (potentially Lynch if not midfield), Whelan, Concannon, Bennett, Gleeson (only if he has a good final), Fagan, Hutchison and Tony Kelly so theres a lot of competition there to. One of Kelly or Lynch could be picked at midfield with Barron. Honourable mentions also to Burke from Dublin and Mannion from Galway. A lot depends on the final. Stephen O'Brien in the football would have definitely got one last year if they had lost their semi final but quietish finals done him out of it - so it can be a funny process. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 01/12/2020 23:53:38 2317525 Link 0 |
Outside of Conor Whelan, for the left corner forward spot, Peter Casey and Graeme Mulcahy are neck and neck for this, along with Dessie Hutchinson. If Peter Casey starts and plays well in the final, he should get it. He has 3 points vs Clare and Waterford, 1 vs Tipp, and 2 vs Galway. He did trojan work in all three games. Similar story for Graeme Mulcahy. Uncharacteristically quiet in the semi final but as folks have pointed out, he was hampered by the sweeper systems and got no ball. Dessie Hutchinson would need to have a very good final to merit an all-star (Rory Hayes recovered well after the 2 goals in the game against Waterford) stpats1886 (Limerick) - Posts: 39 - 02/12/2020 01:20:49 2317538 Link 0 |

I think he got an All-Star in 1998 at full forward. Despite only playing in that position for 20 odd minutes in the final. He had a good 20 minutes mind you.. Its impossible to pick a team that will please everyone. Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1415 - 02/12/2020 11:03:36 2317606 Link 0 |
You are right he was an All Star at full forward in 98. He was HOTY in 94 and didn't get an All Star. So the 2 years he was HOTY he didn't get an All Star at wing back. I don't put any value on All Stars but any team picked this year without T.J. Reid is ridiculous. He carried a weak Kilkenny team all year to a semi-final. He would be the 1st pick forward on both Waterford and Limerick in 2 weeks. No one better in he country the last 5 or so years.

Agree T.J. the first of four certain picks in a badly flawed and useless process. The other three Tadgh DeBurca, Tony Kelly and Stephen Bennett.

Whats with TJ Reid been a certainty? TheBishop (Galway) - Posts: 260 - 02/12/2020 14:24:06 2317677 Link 0 |
T.J. was very good in every game. He has limited talent around him yet he constantly wins balls in the air, best free taker in the country, sets up other players and scores goals. If you watched any of his games as soon as he touched the ball there were 2 or 3 defenders around him. Too say he is not am automatic is just ignorant.

He was the best player on the pitch on Saturday IMO (including Stephen Bennett), caught puck outs, hit 1-14, set up a few other scores. His performance probably saved KK from a 10+ point defeat. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5018 - 02/12/2020 14:42:24 2317685 Link 1 |
Limerick could be considered to fill the other 11 spots or most. Especially if they complete a sweep. I was not ruling these great players out just pondering outside of Limerick. No slight intended. Anyway I disagree with the whole All Star concept. "Star". Every county no matter what level they play at have a star. Every county nominate their best player. Having an All Star game is of no interest to anyone. If it is you have 36 players and you can play a game with them. Do something nice to promote the game. There seems to be no need to select as per position played anymore anyway.
