Good point. I do think people forget most of Dublin's AI's have been won by a point ( sometimes after replays) to Mayo. For me the Mayo and Dub teams of the 10's were tit for tat just a bit of bad luck, Dublin ever so slightly better but had mayo even won one of those AI's people would think very different, they forget the actual result. Mayo give the Dubs the hebi jebis because they push them like no one else. You don't need to be a dub or a mayo fan to see that. Kerry last year came close with a red card but the second came was sealed. Mayo did that year in year out and always by a point even if they came through qualifiers and were useless all year, anyone with a bit of a GAA brain wouldn't predict mayo by form. They do not work that way. Strangest team in GAA history, will always say it. No head or tail to them but put them against the dubs in a final I bet they will put on a show at very least. They might scrape tipp by a point only to draw with the Dubs and maybe even topple them in the replay, who knows. They are the eastenders of football. Pericles, earned the right to what ? A hammering? Sure some other 3 have to be there lol. Did Athlone win the UEFA Cup that year................of course they didn't."]That's true AfricanGael, Athlone didn't win the UEFA cup that year and neither did AC Milan. Your original comparison is bogus because this is the latter stages of the championship and the teams still left in have had to beat other supposedly good teams to get there... they haven't just been parachuted in like the LOI teams you've hypothetically put up against Bayern Munich. I'm not deluded about the odds or what they suggest, but as supporter I'd be happy to see my county take on the challenge.... that's what they play county football for. Maybe you think not being there is better, but ask Donegal supporters or players if you know any what they'd prefer to be looking forward to on Saturday week.

Who exactly is disagreeing with you that Mayo, Tipp and Cavan haven't earned it ?

So why the badly thought out insulting comparison AfricanGael? Pericles (Mayo) - Posts: 2521 - 26/11/2020 20:18:28 2315742 Link 0 |
Mayo have no midfield to compete with O Riardon and don't have the defenders with the height to control Sweeney and Quinlivan , so it looks like Tipp for a place in final against Dublin. History repeating itself with Tipp winging it out. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 408 - 26/11/2020 21:38:09 2315767 Link 1 |
Oh it's far from badly thought out, and what part do you perceive to be insulting ? All it does is show the gap that exists.

Last year they had 11 players out injured, some key personal , and had also played 5 games on the bounce every weekend before engaging with Dublin in semi final. The QF 6 days earlier against Donegal in castlebar had worn them out. It must also be noted that Horan had no real kick-out strategy prepared for Dublin in the 2nd half last summer after their 1st half press .. If Horan doesn't have a kick out plan in place for Dublin like his predecessor Rochford , a similar result is likely to happen again regardless if they have a strong bench or not... Need to beat Tipp anyways before we can go too in depth here.. BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 27/11/2020 09:47:21 2315850 Link 0 |
This is why it's flawed AfricanGael. The only way Bray, Sligo or Athlone could be in a champions league semi-final with Bayern would be if they were capable in the knockout rounds and group games of putting out the likes of Real Madrid, Barca, Juve, PSG, Liverpool, Man City and a raft of other top sides, so all would have to be excellent sides themselves and not the no hopers you were implying. It also suggests that the LOI had become the most competitive league in the world. In that context why should any of the 3 fear Bayern more than those other top European teams they'd already beaten? You could argue that the Dubs are superior in an AI championship context to Bayern in a European and that'd be a reasonable point, but the real class gulf between the contenders is not the same. Cavan should try to go out and play without fear the next day. Meath played with fear, in their shells... an obvious sign was the fact that they didn't allow their FB to move from the square leaving Con O'C with licence to go where he pleased. If you effectively give the Dubs an extra man coming out to the middle and loads of space to play the ball around, then they'll do what they train to do. Carlow a couple of years back gave the Dubs a decent enough game when they didn't just focus on to trying to keep the score down. Cavan have better players than Carlow did and have the momentum from their Ulster win. If you go out thinking you'll be beat you're already beaten.... that's the Leinster malaise, I'm afraid. The big thing, a lot of Mayo players were gassed in the second half. One point up at halftime but should have been 3 or 4 and once Keegan slipped, Con O'C goaled, they'd nothing left in the tank. Horan's decision to rebuild and the sorts of players he needed to bring in was made for him by that second half.

The amount of times I thought Mayo were just about to topple ye. Issue is people forget the result, just recall the winning. Straight out, bar ourselves the year before, every AI has been extremely competitive. Dublin are great but they were almost downed so many times, one point victories are a sign of mentality. Mayo and Dublin were always matched just the Dubs had a harder mentality. Lets see what this final brings, 100 percent mayo and dub, neither will lose in the semi. Right what do you propose. I put my thoughts down. People can argue their own case, fair enough. The worst thing is if counties do nothing. I am well aware that GAA players are amateurs, but they train like professional athletes. The pitches are of standard dimensions.
