There's only one way to spell Tadhg, and the man himself spells it like that, as does everyone with the name. Tadgh doesn't make any sense phonetically in Irish, so it doesn't mean the same thing. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2651 - 02/12/2025 09:53:15 2646737 Link 0 |

I'm probably as pedantic as they come with regard to things like spelling and punctuation, but in fairness, Tadhg is an easy one to get wrong. I sometimes have to stop and think myself when I come to write it. I think too much is being made of the other poster spelling it incorrectly. * Now frantically checks this post for typos or similar before hitting 'Post Message', for fear of the pedantic one making a mistake himself at such a time! :D Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3282 - 02/12/2025 12:25:25 2646762 Link 0 |

Storm in a tea cup !. There's no rights or wrongs in whatever spelling you use, it's all about preferences of the day. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3326 - 02/12/2025 13:56:16 2646774 Link 0 |

It shows a lack of effort on your part. In fairness, the bar you set for yourself is fairly low.

No storm at all. Just pointing out that we see the incorrect spelling of the name a lot. I agree with the other posters that it's an easy one to get wrong, particularly for non-Gaeilge speakers. If I was to keep referring to Paul O'Connell as Plau O'Connell, I'd definitely be spelling his name wrong. So there is a right way and a wrong way of spelling a name. Your initial interest in my spelling / misspelling of Tadgh / Tadhg was to say the least interesting, what it really boiled down to was the reversal of the last two letters, hg simple as that, how they were arranged in the spelling meant a lot to you and I respect that. I went out of my way to put my understanding and my view's on the spelling in my post. However, yesterday I posted two replies making sure they were squeaky clean and within the house rules, unfortunately they didn't make the forum. I also posted a reply to a different poster, sadly that post didn't make the forum either, unless I'm mistaken it is the fourth time in a month, I simply don't understand how it works. I was of the opinion it is a forum to share sporting information, not a popularity forum. Happy Xmas, - - - - sorry I mean Christmas. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3326 - 03/12/2025 11:20:43 2646868 Link 1 |

You might be overthinking it a bit. It's just an observation on how regularly Tadhg is misspelled. I see it sometimes in newspaper articles, so you're far from alone, and I can see how it can be a tricky one. The reversal of the last two letters is indeed the main one I see, but sometimes the d can also find itself out of place. If I reverse the last two letters of the name Paul it becomes a different name. I don't know of any Palu over this side of the country though. I'm on here to hear different opinions, so keep them coming. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2651 - 03/12/2025 16:18:26 2646925 Link 1 |

I have no problem with spelt bread either. Your variation of Tadhg got the all clear from admin a few times now, so they have no issue with that thankfully. It must be something else in your posts, whatever that could be. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2651 - 04/12/2025 12:03:07 2647001 Link 1 |

By rearranging the last two letters in the name Paul you were never going to anything that resembled a name of any kind. On a lighter note, I chose the name Tom, by rearranging the last two letters in the name you come up with TMO, at least he now has a title. The same name, different spellings. Éogan Eoganán, Eòghann or Eòghan. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3326 - 04/12/2025 13:24:22 2647028 Link 1 |

Yes, but for any one person, only one spelling is correct when referring to them. Since we're on rugby here - you wouldn't refer to Eoghan Farrell or Eoin Farrell if talking about the English player. It's Owen Farrell. And yes, still being pedantic here! Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3282 - 04/12/2025 15:48:29 2647051 Link 0 |

Correct, Palu doesn't resemble Paul, and isn't the same name. Likewise, Tadgh also isn't the same name as Tadhg, and isn't a variation of it. It's just a misspelling. It might look more similar to you, but it's just as incorrect as Palu. Eoin, Eoghan, Eóin etc is a different ball game. They're genuine variants of the same name. Phonetically as Gaeilge, they will sound similar. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2651 - 04/12/2025 16:52:37 2647060 Link 0 |
