I see they rugby media are bragging about filling croke park more then the GAA. Why help them out when they keep giving digs at the GAA community Kew (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 07/10/2024 14:55:53 2573477 Link 2 |
When you say rugby media who exactly are you referring to?

You would have to wonder whether Croke Park suits are motivated primarily by making money rather than promoting the association. That will backfire on them the more the games are pushed to the margins, as has already been the consequence of telescoped championship.

How are games pushed to the margins? Intercounty club games are reaching final stages then on to porovincials and All Irelands. Underage and adult, football, LGFA, hurling and camogie in full swing in October when pitches are still reasonably playable.

County finals be held same time as ever they were in Dublin. GAA nationally is losing air wars and attendances. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3118 - 07/10/2024 16:21:53 2573489 Link 1 |

You probably used to have club county championship games between intercounty games back in the day though?

Look Kew there was 82,000 at the AI hurling final between 2 Muster teams and 82,000 at the semi-final between 2 Munster teams while Munster rugby couldn't attract 20,000 to a home URC semi-final this year, there are being very selective about what comparison's they are giving.

All ireland championship compared to urc isn't fair comparison

August is ideal month for playing AI finals. Very little competition from other sports. What is it now, a nothing month, no intercounty and club competitions barely get going. What's the dividend from completing AI competitions at breakneck speed. Club championships still being played out in October November. It's a bit like brexit, an act of self- sabotage. If it's not rectified soon it'll be too late.

Your club championship like ours started in July. The club championship month in April is gone if you hadn't noticed. It wasn't a great idea anyway, as club players then had a 4 month break til their next championship game, and intercounty was put on hold for April, which didnt suit the intercounty squads and managements. That's why the players wanted to get rid of it.

True. What have attendances got to do with it anyway? If there were only 4 Irish GAA teams playing in a similar set up to the URC I'm sure there'd be better attendances at the GAA games. Fact is GAA is way more popular in Ireland than rugby. Comparing the 2 at any level is like comparing apples and oranges.

100%. Mad decision. My club actually made the point regarding August in Dublin.

They are being selective but that doesn't mean it isn't working. The GAA are leaderless against other sports. In Australia the Aussie rules are actively fighting back against rugby league in proactive ways. They aren't sitting back thinking the are too big to lose top spot.

I agree totally. I thought perhaps they needed funding for casement park but that will never be built now. The only other explanation I can think of is the inclusion of the ladies? I heard the GAA totally miscalculated the cost of incorporating them into the GAA. They are more then doubling expenses while not increasing any profit. They will also have to provide and spend on new facilities. By all accounts it seems they signed up to something they cannot provide.

But weren't rugby pundits comparing a unique 1 of event in Croker to Dublin Leinster championship matches. If I remember correctly didn't Munster play Leinster in a URC semi final 2 years ago in the Aviva in front of about 25,000 fans, where have the extra 50,000 come from all of a sudden.

There was very little competition from other sports when All Irelands were in September and GAA still didn't market the finals too well. Almost no competition from other sports in July. I agree with the breakneck speed but not the timeframe when it suits many club and county players to finish in July. They put too many games into too short a time. Keep the timefrane but have less games, longer breaks between games for players to avoid injury. Players and coaches should dictate this. Not the GAA or supporters and definitely not us 'experts' online.
