you think the club will fold? After one bomb call? If that was the case we wouldnt have a single club in the 6. Antrim resolve at its best again

Well to a degree yes. This particular club is at more risk. Its inane stuff. The unionist people that did this or support it need to own their Irish identity. Embrace the sport and the language rather than becoming entrenched in their binary view that they can't be unionist and Irish. Antrim people, particularly Belfast people, took the brunt of the conflict and suffered the most deaths and injuries. Our Gaelic clubs were no different, Ardoyne, St. Endas, Pearses etc, all had members murdered, attacked and clubhouses targeted so don't talk guff about Belfast resolve. The resilience of Antrim people, particularly Belfast folk, is that we have taken everything that could be thrown at us and not only are we still here but going from strength to strength. I hope the East Belfast club will survive and flourish but I do think these won't be the last attacks on it. I wonder in 2020 will parents put their kids into a scenario where their club, and consequently their safety, is targeted on a regular basis? We live in a totally different era.

I wish East Belfast GAC well and would love to see it succeed, but I'm pessimistic. I feel it's to soon for something like this. And for me, a major barrier is the religiously segregated education system.

You obviously don't know anything about the 6 counties if you think that the "segregated education system" is to blame for anything! Our people in Belfast are segregated from the rest because they were burned and murdered out of every other part of the city. East Belfast GAA and the Irish language courses are great. It is their own lunatics they have to fear unfortunately. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3120 - 25/07/2023 18:09:18 2496904 Link 2 |

He was a member of the Trinity Hurley club that played a game that was basically what is now field hockey Like it or not, the Ulster unionists/protestants are ethnically British, That is not an argument against national unity but the notion that they are all living under a delusion is rather naive. The Shinners of 1970s actually tacitly recognised this by offering regional autonomy in Éire Nua. As influenced by Desmond Fennell. Can anyone here recommend a good documentary on the life of GAA clubs in Northern Ireland through the last centenary? Preferably something to tell the story of the average club and the average club payer pre-troubles and during the conflict? Cbar (Mayo) - Posts: 332 - 14/08/2023 09:26:45 2500399 Link 0 |
Oisin Mc Conville was involved in one but mostly centred around Cross. Think it was True North but might be wrong.

Another Loyalist security alert today at the East Belfast pitches in Castlereagh. Shameful but unsurprising. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9785 - 05/09/2023 12:08:30 2503123 Link 2 |
When you say pitches in East Belfast - are these pitches and clubs set up by the people Unionist community? (forgive my ignorance) Cbar (Mayo) - Posts: 332 - 06/09/2023 14:44:16 2503310 Link 0 |
They're meant to be shared pitches with all sports played at them but have been targeted by Loyalist paramilitary thugs since East Belfast GAA started to play there. If the PSNI really wanted to stop it they could but the political will to do so isn't there. Most Loyalist paramilitaries still work for all the various branches of the British Securocrat Establishment.

It doesn't mater who owns them! UVF and UDA have no business threatening anyone.

This always saddens me when I hear this kind of thing. Here's a genuine effort to get all communities involved together and as always there's an element who want to stay in the dark old days. What kind of future do they envisage for their own children is anybody's guess but it's certainly not a positive one. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2085 - 07/09/2023 13:45:45 2503425 Link 0 |
