The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches

Replying To cavanman47:  "From a pure health point of view, then of course he's going to recommend level 5.

As the government have repeatedly said, it is NPHET's job to recommend measures to reduce the virus as much as possible - that's the easy part. If they had their way, we'd be in Level 4 or 5 for the foreseeable. And that's fine, that's their job.

But it's the government's job to get the balance right. . .to weigh up the consequences of Level 5 vs. the closure of businesses and loss of thousands of jobs. 20% of the country were on the PUP in March! That simply isn't sustainable, regardless of our ability to borrow.

As I said above, Level 3 is more than sufficient in order to suppress the virus. It won't be the government's fault if case number rise, it will be the fault of the individuals who do not follow the guidelines."
Yep, I'd say the main reason the government ignored the level 5 recommendation is that we simply can't afford it.

Fermanagh GAA have suspended all county training duevtoba severe outbreak of Covid 19.

How many more suspensions cancellations before the GAA bow to the inevitable and calls off the rest of the season.
It would be a shame for the players involved and all panels appear keen to keep going but it doesnt look good.

I think I might have mentioned this before here, but lets say that inter county does go ahead, the logistics involved need some consideration. Firstly, how do players get to matches? I'd assume that the usual team bus can't operate with the distancing advice? I would say each county would have at least 40 people involved? Do they just send two or three buses?

Also, the dressing room situation - how will that work? Imagine for example (and hopefully!) Donegal made it to the semi final after winning Ulster. Perhaps Croke Park has a few more than the standard two dressing rooms? Do players stagger getting togged in again? Maybe McEniff will make the Skylon hotel available for the Donegal lads!

Replying To football first:  "With Fermanagh and Armagh stopping senior squad training, and Kerry hurlers reporting a positive case, is an inter-county campaign really feasible? The best option now might be to finish off the remaining club championship games behind closed doors, and bring the whole season to an end. Regroup and get ready for 2021..."
My fear is 2021 could be worse, how can we start the league in the new year when this mess might be even worse by then given the usual crisis in health care in wintertime coupled with covid, competitions like the McKenna cup will have to be abandoned.
sport is vital in my opinion for all of us young and old but human life has to come first and we need to protect the vulnerable, only hope is they find a vaccine that works because this living with the virus thing isn't working too well up here anyway.
it's an unholy mess, I think they will lock Donegal down to level 5 soon if it keeps rampaging through the county.

Replying To Mayonman:  "When news of the increase in levels started to leak all I could think of was please let the All Ireland go a head.

Now I know in the greater scheme of things it may not seem important particularly if you are losing your job or have someone close very ill. But as a society we need something to keep us sane during this crazy time and I think elite sport should be exempt from restrictions as much as possible as long as guidelines are adhered to (I don't count club as elite). During initial lockdown we were blessed with great weather and I think that really helped. There is going to be wall to wall GAA for approx 6-7 weekends.

Because of my feelings on the above I was really pi**ed off to see what happened in Waterford where the player waiting for a test result played and then the various goings on with celebrations and spectators watching games close together. Spontaneous celebrations are understandable but people sitting close together isn't. As for the club in Waterford....... the we didn't understand excuse........ffs there should be consequences for the club. inexcusable.

Can't wait for it all to start!!"
What happened with Dungarvan should result in they losing the match. Who are they trying to fool ? They purposely played that player and are now trying to cause deflection or garner sympathy by hi-lighting attacks on social media. I don't think anyone should fall for their regret. The only thing they regret is getting caught. Shameful.

I think those pre seasons competition won't be happening next year. It was mentioned in the planned resturcting of the calendar, that there wouldn't be place for them. Plus with an All Ireland going into December if it does happen, counties would need a break.

There was no real break for players with the pre season competitions, , playing some of the games before and after Christmas.

I read today as well that several top scientists have written to the UK government strongly advocating for a herd immunity approach to be taken! You can be sure that Arlene and co will want to align with the UK approach even if it metaphorically means driving off a big cliff.

What then will that mean for our own measures in the South? I don't think the UK will adopt a herd immunity strategy, but then again I didn't think they'd vote to leave the EU either.

This is an excellent point, the logistics of all this are going to be difficult. They would really need to be testing the players frequently to allow them to get on a bus together. Teams will need to use the dressing rooms as they can't be expected to travel back home from an away match without showering.

They all went for herd immunity when they opened schools and especially university's. Did they think students would stick to small groups? Not students fault things have got out of control.

Right there Cavan man. . NPHET can advise, but the Government have to rule. The problem with NPHET was the haste and timing of the announcement late on Sunday night. We have had 7 months of restrictions to date, people are tired of it. Businesses are important for the economy, as you say.

they should get rid of january competitions anyway. why do sides need to be playing a cup in january anyway especially when they will be playing friendlies anyway

would players have to get on a bus together and you would have to change how players are working etc if you are to open up all facilities.

It isnt about herd immunity by opening schools and universities. That things have went out of control can be put at students in plenty of areas. House parties etc

Saved 'countless' lives, yet the vast majority of fatal cases are old people with underlying conditions. And they weren't protected, the rest of us are fine.
My wife tested pos in April, she's 70 and there's not a bother on her.
The equation is top heavy and it has to stop.

It is a hard call but you have to accept the science and expertise advice. No one on here would go to the cobbler with a tooth problem. So selective acceptance of qualified advice is not on. If the government and health authorities do not inform and instruct you that is negligence and I am sure there would be a public out cry down the road calling it homicidal behaviour. Yes people may be fed up but I guarantee you they are not people that had to bury a family member or friend. They are people who feel they have no skin in the problem. ! YET !
Simple follow the rules and advice and we may get our beloved games in some form. If not accept why. Or be idiots make people sick and ruin it for everyone else. Especially those that are games are a form of therapy for.

Science and experts are using figures that if someone healthy tested positive with covid and got run over by a bus 27 days later, there're still on list of covid related deaths. Effin look after the sick from other diseases.

I've tried.

I've read people speculate in the last number of weeks that that was possibly the case in the UK, but I've never seen any confirmation that this is true.

What chief expert and what interview are you talking about?
