That was a poor affair to be fair. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 01/02/2020 20:48:02 2264282 Link 1 |
Never seen anyone get a red for Flynn's type of tackle or black for Fitzimons challenge. Commentator said Fitsimmons challenge could be interpreted as stopping the support runner but never seen black for it before. centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 01/02/2020 21:21:50 2264312 Link 2 |
Pretty poor match. Expected much much better. Jeez the Rugby was nearly better! David (Meath) - Posts: 567 - 01/02/2020 22:07:11 2264333 Link 0 |
I'll try this again in less words without giving a hard time to a certain participant from the Match. The Black card was as bad if not worse than the Red. Had the potential of been a real hard hitting fair game until the Red Mist arrived. Hopefully this will get through.

I agree u don't see red too often for Conroy tackle but u probably should. It was high, closed fist with a certain amount of force. I can understand u would feel hard done by because others get away with it often.

In fairness Small nearly had his head taken off. Looked a dangerous tackle so red by the letter of the law. Game was very poor. Mayo could have won it but for their poor finishing and a decent performance from the Dublin full backs. Dublin were very sloppy in possession and midfield, just like last week, was missing for large parts of the game. I thought our forwards were also patchy, Dan O'Brien was anonymous, Kev Mc was sloppy and Scully linked up play but that role is just slowing down our transition. Aaron Byrne again looked the part. I thought Davy Byrne was very good tonight and Ciaran ran the show once he got going. Overall as a spectacle...lots of dragging and cynical stuff, fellas going down easily, endless hand passing (advance mark doing nothing to solution this), sloppy passing, poor score execution. Just a poor affair all round and just makes you wonder where football is going with this mass defending and these endless hand passing tactics. Possession is everything it seems. Gone are the days of the corner forwards making smart spurts to a corner to receive an arrow from midfield. Bernard come back please!!! Anyway, a win in Castlebar is always a good win.

Can I point out that the ref didn't ruin the match? The tackle by Flynn was head high, late and there was definitely an element of striking involved. Great decision by ref, a brave decision and the correct one. Zero chance that will be appealed and zero chance of it being rescinded. The guy in the middle of the pitch has a history of getting big calls incorrect- no way was it a red card and destroyed the match as a contest. Mayo needs to improve their shooting options considerable. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 02/02/2020 11:02:50 2264406 Link 9 |
I thought that some of the younger lads went a bit OTT with their tackles against Donegal last week and that this lack of discipline needed to be contained. What Jordan Flynn did was again headless and anyone who remembers the corresponding fixture in Croker last year with the same ref oughtn't to have been too surprised that a red card was produced. The less you notice the ref the better, but Barry C was the main talking point out of yesterday's game. I wasn't too optimistic going into the match, but the result was a foregone conclusion after the red. To the credit of the 14 left on and the subs, they put in a decent shift to keep things respectable and had their finishing matched the work rate the result would have been in the balance till the end. Once the fairly fortuitous goal (I think Dean's deflection could have taken any trajectory) went in there was very little chance of a Mayo come back. Some good performances from the likes of Oisin Mullin and again O'Hora were the main plusses. Conroy deserves a start and I was a bit puzzled by the substitution of Carr, but overall it looks like Ciaran Mac has work to do to get something better out of the lads at his disposal for the game in Navan next week. Cassidy is a poor ref but the sending off was justified. You can debate it if you want but I wouldn't be crying over it. The problem was the consistency of the referee throughout the game, random calls for similar offences on both sides. Ruined the game. Pathetic response. Address the issues like a grown up if you're able to. Point out the errors in my post.

Red card call was fine but he was dreadful in general. Dublin probably would have won but Cassidy is a poor ref.

Thought it wasnt a red card, yellow at most, wasnt a strike, no closed fist more caught him with his arm but think Flynn wanted to leave a bit on him so a yellow would have sufficed. Ref was quick in maybe a bit too quick but its the way the ref saw it so cant do anything about it. Fitzsimmons black card wasnt a black card, again maybe a yellow for late hit but wasnt cynical or a pull down. tommy132 (Mayo) - Posts: 639 - 02/02/2020 14:03:37 2264446 Link 2 |
You're dead right there. I cannot for the life of me understand why the analysts came to think it wasn't a red. Think the black on Fitzsimmons was strange also. If Mayo sharpeners their shooting they would have a far better chance in these games. It's poor standard and that needs addressing. It'll be a job for Horan to get things straightened out for championship but they have players to come back and plenty of work to do. Galway will be a handful for anyone this year though.

After watching Dublin and Kerry last week I was excited about the upcoming year. Thought the game had corrected itself. Yesterday brought me crashing back to reality. Terrible game, advanced mark is a joke, hard to get excited about any game except Kerry Dublin. gatha (Kilkenny) - Posts: 318 - 02/02/2020 14:48:19 2264456 Link 0 |
