It's not the be-all and end-all if they lose either. They won this competition last season but were hampered with injuries going into the championship last summer and ran out of bodies and gas in the All semi last year after the dreaded backdoor route. Goal this season is for a comfortable mid-table finish ,continue integrating youth and keeping the overall squad squad fit , and win Connacht at all costs. I'm not saying its the be all and end all, but its important. and they absolutely should be gunning for a win

I see the Dubs winning this quite easily. Probably by around 6 points or so. The rivalry is now overstated given Mayo don't even run the Dubs close any more. Kerry are the team to beat the Dubs. Mayo have regressed. Could be a damp squib. OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 31/01/2020 14:58:22 2264004 Link 0 |
It mattered enough to Kerry last week ConnollyDub to pick the best side they had at their disposal, given that a few players weren't available for selection. I'm with you as a supporter, but what the Mayo management are looking for out of this game in terms of a result is very much being balanced by developmental considerations. I'd love a win, but if that was the only thing that mattered they'd have picked a different side.

Mayo teams always go out to win. Whether they are good enough is a totally different matter, BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 31/01/2020 18:24:16 2264043 Link 0 |
Rory in for Philly TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4517 - 31/01/2020 21:38:29 2264079 Link 2 |
Dubs have made just one change from pre tip lineup last week, the ROC is in for Philly. Mannion is down to start again. Very strong team from Dessie. Surprised that he wasn't a bit more adventurous here. Clearly expecting a tough game and eager the get his first win at this level. Joxer (Dublin) - Posts: 4745 - 31/01/2020 21:45:28 2264082 Link 6 |
Dessie going strong here. He must be still upset over that u21 semi final in 2016 and will want to set the record straight on a personal level. BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 31/01/2020 23:10:41 2264094 Link 0 |

And you said Dessie would be using the league to experiment and blood young players, it's pretty plain to see that Dessie is going to stick to the Jim gavin blueprint which makes sense I suppose, sure why mess with what's worked for the last 5 years.

Bit dissapointed myself if im being honest, that said you always take the named team with a pinch of salt. Though Mayo is game we wouldn't like to loose given the rivalry and media it creates and Dessie will probably not want to loose it. Another way to look at it, is that pecking order has probably changed and likes Rory, Macker and Andrews have to reestablish themselves as players int he squad. While we still had 4 or five players on the DCU team who one Sigerson during the week. The bench will be interesting, to be fair we gave time to McHugh, Bugler, O Brien, Comerford and Byrne last week. A lot of us would like to see POCB and we all have a few personal favorites from other age we would like to see be given a whirl. The competition is savage though. I think tonight a big night for the ROC myself. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4517 - 01/02/2020 10:09:17 2264127 Link 2 |
definitely, not many games now before championship rolls round for Dessie to find his best 15 that works for him. I know the leagues have been used for experimenting in the past but Dublin have a reputation and expectancy on them now as you would imagine. So many quality players to pick from for Dublin, but for Dessie to find the best 15 for him he cant afford to make too many changes at once. You would imagine that over the course of the league there will be many new/young players given a chance to prove their worth for Dublin but at the same time, the Dublin side is a serious outfit and it cant be that easy to walk in and just be guaranteed a starting place even if it is only the league. I would imagine Dublin will start a very strong team in most games with the addition of a few new faces here and there to see who fits in. After all its still a pretty young team as it is and most of these guys have more than earned their place in the team. boman11 (Antrim) - Posts: 237 - 01/02/2020 10:19:09 2264130 Link 1 |
That's true bowman, in fairness Dessie has picked up the handiest job in the country, all he has to do is follow the blueprint that Jim gavin setout for him and he'll pick up the next 2/3 allirelands handy, if he just doesn't let his ego get the better of him and start changing things. Just follow the blue print. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 01/02/2020 11:49:05 2264150 Link 1 |
Sure it'll never be as handy as winning a Sam after playing just 3 games.

Dessie will be up against this year. Kerry are favourites to win championship and league for me. The dubs will be in transition this year with McMahon,Mcmanaman,Connolly,Andrew's,Macauley ,OCarroll and Daly past their best. Even if they didn't start they were always first off the bench.

Ref just ruined any chance of a competitive match BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 01/02/2020 19:20:46 2264237 Link 2 |
Red a bit harsh I am sure ref will "even" it up! especially if he saw that as a red there will be plenty of opportunities to make teams even again. But a pain in the behind when it happens ruins the game.
