The GAA have been lucky up to now with the weather but all these games so early in the year is counterproductive. I heard Jim Bolger on the radio at the week-end, and he seems to be driving an extraordinary agenda, in his presidential manifesto. He seems to be on a crusade to reduce expenditure by county teams. He didn't expand too much on how this approach might logically drive 'a continuous mediocrity' mission though the counties, or how such an eventuality might ultimately affect attendances. Was thinking the same thing that this game would reach the 15k mark but as correctly mentioned I'd imagine 2 counties with a big rugby fanbase. Limerick's support has really swelled in the last couple of years, I remember we played them in the Gaelic grounds in 2016 and there was only 2 or 3k at it although it was a horrible Saturday evening in February, I even think they got had a home semi final in the league in 2017 and it didn't reach the 10k mark, all there home games the last couple of years have got more than that. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 24/02/2020 15:07:04 2269767 Link

When the new stadium is built for Connacht Rugby you will see a big improvement in Connacht Rugby's attendances. I remember meeting some Bath supporters in a hotel in Galway a few years ago and they were dreading spending 80 minutes in the cold and wet Sportsground to watch a Connacht v. Bath game. Obviously with Connacht being a predominantly rural province you would expect GAA to be stronger and lets face it, Rugby is new to the province. Sligo Grammar school is the only traditional Rugby school in the province, compared to the other provinces Rugby is a virgin sport in Connacht. So, I don't think its fair to compare attendances of GAA games in Connacht to Rugby games in the Sportsground. Lets face it, it was only a few years ago that Connacht Rugby was very nearly let go bust completely by the IRFU. You can't compare GAA and Rugby in Connacht. Its great to see attendances up at "some" inter-county GAA games, however I do feel that we are going down a road where the glamour counties are getting priority over the less glamourous counties. Dublin of course will always bring in the numbers, Kerry, Cork and Mayo to their credit will always bring numbers even to league games in the middle of winter. Galway supporters only seem to come out when they are 100% sure that their team will do well. And these are the games that the GAA will promote and sell to the detriment of the other counties. When was the last time you saw a game involving Leitrim, Sligo, Carlow, Antrim, Cavan, Wicklow televised ? These weaker counties are not deemed "sexy" enough so are not given the same opportunities to promote their teams as the stronger counties, so obviously they don't attract the same level of support at games. People like supporting winners and unfortunately even though they say they promote all counties the GAAs focus is on promoting the winners (read "sexy" counties). In 20 years time, GAA in these weaker counties will be even more irrelevant than it is now and you will have a small group of super-8 counties garnering all of the promotion, investment and support. The GAA is the heartbeat of Ireland and has a presence in EVERY town, village and parish that other sports can only dream of. "Kerry, Cork and Mayo to their credit will always bring numbers" Kerry traditionally only show up in big numbers for finals although they do get big home support I'll give them that. The Clifford factor seems to be incrassi g attendance as we had a good kerry support in castlebar last weekend. Cork...I assume you are referring to their hurlers? Totally agree about connacht and a big rise whenever the new stadium is completed. More seats, more covered areas will see a lot more people go to games. The weaker counties wont ever get regular televised games with a competition format that doesnt suit broadcasters to show weaker counties more. Look at premiership soccer.
