Ballyhale Shamrocks completed a clean sweep of All Ireland club hurling titles for Kilkenny on Sunday after Tullaroan (intermediate) and Conahy Shamrocks (junior) held up their end of the bargain on Saturday. Has this ever been done before? Just shows how strong the Kilkenny club scene is. Carlow teams are benefitting from playing in their leagues as well. wex (Wexford) - Posts: 10 - 22/01/2020 17:17:59 2261621 Link 2 |
The first time it has ever be done in either hurling or football.

Brilliant success story for this county. IssacBall (Derry) - Posts: 51 - 23/01/2020 00:06:29 2261699 Link 1 |
TBF all the money they have, and its plentiful, goes to hurling. They don't bother with football at all so whatever funds they receive is automatically going in one direction. Hurleys, sliothars, coaching and that's it. No to take away from their achievements but there's no other show in that county. The communities are built around the hurling clubs. Although to give credit look at the number of former players giving back and helping develop further success. Shefflin with Ballyhale, DJ with underage, Carlow IT and now senior team, Derek Lyng with senior team, Brennan with Laois and so on. That can't be taken away from them and should be duly recognised. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1981 - 23/01/2020 12:54:58 2261758 Link 1 |
Here we go again, more ignorance regarding football in Kilkenny From Wikipedia: There is an excellent underage and adult club football structure in Kilkenny. Glenmore, Mullinavat, Railyard and Muckalee are the football strongholds. All Kilkenny clubs are dual, both hurling and football. There are football leagues at all ages. The county football team plays in the All-Britain Football Championship, winning it it 2015, 2017, 2018, and also the Leinster Junior Football Championship. All this costs money. Here's the GAA fixtures in Kilkenny this weekend, nearly all football. http://www.kilkennygaa.ie/fixtures?countyBoardID=15&daysAfter=12&nosort=1&orderByRank=Y Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2764 - 23/01/2020 13:29:26 2261773 Link 0 |
I think the other thing that needs to be considered here is the 'position' that the Kilkenny Teams are sitting in comparison to other counties. juicy (Meath) - Posts: 402 - 23/01/2020 13:58:10 2261784 Link 2 |
You would think before you go to the bother of posting that you would check your facts, there is no league football at U15 or U17 level in KK. The U15 and U17 Championship isn't played until Dec. Yes there is adult League fixtures this weekend which is the first round of fixtures of three. carlowkat (Kilkenny) - Posts: 2 - 23/01/2020 14:25:47 2261788 Link 1 |

You're splitting hairs. League or Championship, football is played at all ages in Kilkenny.

Not splitting hairs at all, at U17 and U15 a team is only guaranteed 1 game. At adult level, they are only guaranteed 4.

Kilkenny has 12 senior clubs, 12 intermediate clubs, the rest Junior or lower. Some of the stronger senior clubs would have their second teams hurling at Junior level. Any team that wins the inter or junior in Kilkenny is going to be a decent outfit, they tend to win most of the All Ireland Junior and inter championships. Also Tipp had 30 senior and 18 intermediate teams in 2019. So for the junior cship, the 49th "best" team is representing Tipp (never really the case either as a senior clubs second team cant represent the county). Likewise 31st best team at intermediate compared to 13th in KK. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 24/01/2020 00:18:33 2261862 Link 0 |
Yer man from Laois is all over this argument these days, and while mathematically it sounds lovely, it conviently ignores county population numbers. Kilkenny county has a population of about 99,000, Galway has a population of 258,000, Laois has 84,000, and of course Dublin has 1.3 million and Cork has over 500,000. Any talk about fixing the number of senior, intermediate, and junior teams will only benefit the counties with large population bases, and may even leave the smaller counties scrambling to fill the team 'quota'. If there is going to be some effort to regulate this, which I'm not opposed to, it has to be based on player base numbers, not a one size fits all. Or better still, stop playing silly buggers with false dichotomies, and let the counties find their own balance. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 24/01/2020 00:36:44 2261866 Link 0 |
Just wondering if this is the case. Do you know?
