Replying To Young_gael:  "Couldn't make the game myself with work: raging. The first match of the season, even OBC, is always a big game. It was good to see the use of players and nice to see guys getting a chance, I'm saddened you believe certain guys didn't stand up who were given a game but theres a few more pre-season games and challenge games to lay down a marker. Looked like a near full-strength Louth team as well to be fair. Live and learn, early days yet."
No were near a full strength louth team I would say mulroy Byrne Tommy Durkin and the goalkeeper certs to start come the league

Thought the atmosphere was good, seen a good bit of meath spirit on the field, we played until the final whistle, and worked hard throughout the field. Nice fast direct ball worked. Hopefully we can build on this

Replying To bert09:  "Fully agree on Jack O Connor - put in a good performance. Campion also really good. To be fair i thought Eoin lynch did really well in our back line. Conlon way out of his depth on full back line. Couldn't understand the long kick outs into a gale. I suspect this was driven by management? Strategy appeared to be to kick long to half forwards running on to collect."
Brian Conlon looked lost. Yorke I thought did ok , agree re O'Connor and lynch. It's early December so not too bothered , won't make up mind on who should be starting in Omagh until this is over, but a few would need a bit of improvement to make the panel. That been said the weather was terrible, and they kept fighting till the end. so can't be too negative. expect a raft of changes for the Mullingar game.

Ah fair enough, my apologies. I recognised the surnames and assumed it was a stronger side on that, all the same Louth teams cherish beating Meath and good Louth teams have been periodically able to do so down the years so hopefully they push on and have a good season.

Exactly, very poor conditions. Wouldn't be too worried and im sure management will be happy with the effort from some of the newbies. Looking forward to the next one in Mullingar

Replying To LeitrimRoyal99:  "Right. That was a fairly big waste of time. 0 atmosphere. 0 intensity. Howling wind. Felt like a training game. Positives. Jack O'Connor looks very good and didn't look like a 19 year old. We used the attacking make pretty well and Thomas O'Reilly played well. Negatives no agression shown by our defenders, so loose. Sean Reilly and Jason Scully who are older than the other young lads and both panelists last year were both very poor I thought. Brian Conlon looked completely lost at full back and then his ball skills were fairly poor at midfield. Our kickouts weren't very good. Don't know if that was Yorkes fault or the boys out the field. He made 2 solid saves but need another game of 2 to decide. Hogan not on long enough to get a feel for. But let's see next week because it was hard to get a feel for things today"
This post sums the game up perfectly no atmosphere 0 intensity right form start to finish Louth deserved there win should have won by only very poor finishing with at least 2 goal chances. Yorke did well to stop goal chances. Meath struggled to get there hands on the ball and when they did game it away cheaply. Waste of time going to game really. Maybe it's just a bit better than a traning session but only just. Robin Clarke I did well. Costello did ok in the second half he was nervous in first. Lynch and O'Connor where good. Nice to see donal leinhan back if he was only on for 1.30.

Can you provide Andy with any inside knowledge on Westmeath?

Actually for some odd reasons some of the best players in Westmeath aren't on the team. Now maybe they been drafted in. Haven't got updates on new additions. But I'll help anyway I can :)

Good Man yourself, would there be any chance you could develop a kickout strategy.

Nothing odd about that .....sure only a few of the actual Meath players are involved in this tournament , so why is it odd for Westmeath ?

westmeath are only using the o byrne cup as a means of blooding new players . their focus is staying in division 2 and winning or losing an o byrne cup will not alter that plan

Not speaking specially about this tournament. In general. Thought that was obvious. My mistake

Another not great performance today but who really cares. O'Byrne cup in December is fairly laughable

Yeah I have the one sheet program, but lot of the names were wrong. I'll post it tomorrow.
One observation from today was that when we have a narrow lead play keep ball. Don't kick possession away.

Even though we were under strength we were eliminated by under strength Division 3 & 2 teams not exactly a show of strength from our reserves. Wasn't at today's game but was listening and we lost at the lead at the death by playing 'keep ball' rather than going for the insurance point. Viewing tapes of the 80s team should be mandatory viewing for those boys, create a bit of belief to keep going no matter what. And I would also throw in the full 80 minutes of the 1970 Leinster Final as well.
