Iconic Scores

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With Frank McGlynn retiring, it reminded me of a brilliant point he scored against Cork in the 2012 AI semi final. It was one of many great scores over the year, but I remember being at that game and thinking, Holy Jesus we are actually gonna win this All Ireland, no team will stop us.

So an iconic Donegal score for sure.

What would your 5 favorite iconic scores be from your team? I'm not simply talking about a great score in a match. I'm talking about great scores at clutch moments in big matches.

In no particular order:

Donegal:
1. Kevin Cassidy's winning point vs Kildare in 2011 AI QF
2. Declan Bonner's point at fist pump 1992 AI Final
3. Frank McGlynn's point vs Cork
4. Michael Murphy's goal vs Mayo 2012 AI Final
5. Colm McFadden's goal vs Dublin 2014 AI semi Final

There is no hope i can take 5 from antrim that will be worth talking about on an open thread lol so ill just go 5 iconic scores from recent memory.

1. Dean Rock/Stephen Cluxton free kicks to win the AI ( pretty much the same situation so i wont do 2 seperately) - mammoth scores when you can imagne the pressure
2. Conor Mcmanus vs Tyrone Ulster semi final - probably the best point from playi can remember watching
3. Diarmud Connolly vs Kerry 2016 Semi final ( off the left) the stones it takes to have that off your so called weaker foot at that stage of a game is incredible.
4. Cillian O'connor vs Dublin to take it to a replay - for the same reason as above except on the stronger foot. He took the ball himself 60 yards out amd drove forward knowing he get that score. Unreal confidence
5. Not so much recent this one but if we're talking iconic scores i cant not mention Mugsys goal in 05

1) Brian Dooher's point in AI 2008 where he beat 2 kerry men along the side line and hit it from about 35 yards off outside of boot to level the match - unreal
2) Canavan's Goal in 2005 AI final
3) Canavan's free in 2005 Semi final vs armagh to win the game
4) S Cavanaghs monster from play (must have been 50 yards out) vs Donegal to finally beat them after 4/5 defeats in Ulster Final 2016
5) old school one here - Paul Donnelly in 95 against Derry where Tyrone won with 13 men. Once that when over the comeback was complete

Cluxtons winning kick v Kerry in 2011 stands out in recent memory as being iconic. As you mention Murphys goal v us :( is also iconic.

A bit further back, I remember Ja Fallon's kcikmfrom the sideline v Kildare in 98.

From a Mayo perspective, Ciaran McDonalds winning point v Dublin in 2012 is etched in my memory.

Brick Molloy goal v Tyrone 2011. Without that goal things may have been much different.

Murphy's point in Ballybofey league against Meath, 2013?, from side line. Draw game or won by point?. Not sure.

That Kevin Cassidy point against us was as good a score as you'll see. Super stuff.

From Meath perspective
5, joe Sheridan v Louth 10, (probably more ironic than iconic)
4, the 5. Goals past cluxton 2010.
3, Ollie Murphy goal v Westmeath 01 (think right year)
2, Graham geraghty perfect lobbed goal v Tyrone 07.
1 . Kevin foley goal in 4 game saga v dubs 91, voted the best score in gaa.
There are others but I kept them to this century apart from the one everybody knows.

Tough one.

1 That Clucko point in 2011
2 Barney Rock's goal in the 83 AI semi at home to Cork
3 Dean Rock GPS point in 2017. As much for the alien intruder device than anything else.
4 Jack Sheedy scored a monster clutch point v Meath in the LSFC into the Canal End which I will always remember but can't think of what game it was in the 90s.
5 the 2010 Eoghan O'Gara goal against Tyrone that effectively put an end to a great team and signalled the arrival of what is now the backbone of the Dublin 5 in a row team.

Possibly the greatest goal of all time, Ciaran McCabe for Down vs Derry in 1994. Not only a brilliantly worked goal and a thunderous strike, but also for the context; the score that clinched a magnificent game played at furious intensity in a cauldron, between the two best teams in Ireland that year. It might have been a 1st round game but the All-Ireland was at stake. After winning this game the rest was relatively easy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GvTBsA_TaA

Unfortunately, I have to go back a bit further to get most of the scores I'd consider as iconic as a supporter, but I've thrown in one recent one:

1. Matthew Clancy's goal against Derry in the 2001 semi final.
2. Seán Óg's second half point against Kildare in the 1998 final.
3. Johnny Heaney's very late goal in Castlebar against Mayo in 2018.
4. Michael Donnellan's scrappy extra-time goal in the 1998 Connacht final replay against Roscommon.
5. Michael Meehan's goal from a 14 yard free against Cork in 2013.

The last one was in a match we lost and the final whistle blew straight after, but it's definitely a score that sticks in the memory for me.

From a Dublin perspective:

Stephen Cluxton's free kick to win the All-Ireland in 2011. As iconic as it comes.

Kevin McManamon's goal in the same match to bring Dublin back from the dead.

Dean Rock's free kick to win one of the greatest All-Ireland finals in recent memory with the GPS thrown at him in 2017.

Alan Brogan's 'coast to coast' point in the All-Ireland final in 2015.

Kevin McManamon goal against Kerry in the epic 2013 Semi Final.

Honorable mentions to Eoghan O'Gara's goal v Tyrone in 2010, Con's dancing feet and finish against Mayo in 2017, Murchan's glory run in the replay this year.

I think the equalising point from this year's drawn final will go down as the most iconic score from this Dublin team. It epitomised the Dubs of this decade.

Ciaran Carey v Clare 1996

On a personal level seeing DJ Carey rise high catch then in 1 move land turn sidestep his man and score without ever looking at the posts. It summed up in one move the difference between what the great KK side and Limerick could do in the 00s

Also speaking of the 00s any goal ever scored by Donor Ryan was iconic
