Myself and macca999 would be representative of the voice of Fermanagh and our county like Donegal believe that the location is wrong and the site at the former Maze Prison would have been a much superior setting with loads of land to built a bigger capacity stadium with plenty of facilities and carparking being no issue. We think it's a big mistake and will end up a white elephant a bit like our own county's so called centre of excellence stuck up on a mountain in the back of no where! Just hope it won't become another white elephant like Cork. Ignoring the politics, if you can, but surely a municipal stadium catering for multiple sports would have been a better idea?

Fair play to the Alliance Party who have today called out the attempts to sectarianise the rebuilding of Casement. There are those in the North who will always be implacably opposed to the GAA for pure bigotry reasons. Unfortunately there is also an element within the GAA in Ulster who hate the very thought of Belfast getting the Ulster final again. The same ones who come into the city for their Civil Service, NHS, teaching jobs etc but never want Belfast to get anything in return. Have you ever been to Casement? It's a long way from 'top of a mountain's stuff. Right in the middle of west Belfast where two motorways meet and a rail link a short walk away. Parking facilities are pretty much everywhere you look. They host festivals at Boucher Rd regularly, shopping centres very close by too. I'm not sure how this matches up to a random rural site in Fermanagh or Donegal.

I wouldn't begrudge Antrim/Belfast a quality Casement Park stadium, but I agree with the Fermanagh posters that its not the best location for the top GAA stadium for Ulster for the same logistical reasons mentioned by others posters. Also its justification is worrying, listened to SDLP MLA on RTE Radio 1 yesterday evening, they kept chatting about it needing to be finished quickly for "The Euro's" where it will host maybe one game and he kept saying "It can't be a GAA exclusive stadium". It made me wonder if the British Government incapable of part-funding a GAA exclusive stadium, like they did for soccer exclusive Windsor Park and Rugby exclusive Ravenhill? A few years back it was being rushed for a Rugby World Cup bid, like of course it can host those events, but Stadium funding shouldn't be conditional on some big Soccer or Rugby event being around the corner. It would have been better alright, but that ship has sailed once it was turned down an Windsor and Ravenhill got done up. It's the next best option and will be used. Can't see it being a White Elephant and even likes of Ulster Rugby are saying they'd use it for big matches that Ravenhill can't hold, when they'd usually have to go to Dublin.

I heard Jeffrey Donaldson on RTE complaining about the cash for Casement Park. Some things never change, he also criticised the Irish Govt putting €800million into NI infrastructure, Mainly to develop the A5 motorway.

Great to see the GAA have a new modern stadium in Belfast it should have happened years ago only for narrow minded local politicians, look forward to visiting it in the years ahead ! OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 718 - 21/02/2024 15:18:41 2527400 Link 1 |
Yep. Also saw Israel flags being flown as I drove past a few Unionist estates in Derry the other day. My only conclusion is that their attitude is "if them ones fly Palestinian flags in support of what's going on in Gaza, then we must support the other side", regardless of how barbaric they're being. The mind does truly boggle at such an outlook. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9519 - 21/02/2024 15:36:24 2527404 Link 1 |
Only a twisted DUPite steeped in 17th Century bigotry could issue a statement complaining about a free gift of over half a billion €€€s

No dog in the fight, but neither flag innocent when it comes to barbarism. Simplicity on both sides too. Republicans in 40s and 50s were very much pro Israel and indeed there were connections to Haganagh during Zionist fight against the Brits.

It would be great if this stadium was built. The GAA missed a trick with their failure to often more funding for the stadium more than the £15 million they have already committed. REDANDBLACK30 (Down) - Posts: 1673 - 21/02/2024 16:41:05 2527420 Link 0 |
The Irish Government money for projects in the North including the A5 and Narrow Water bridge is very welcome and shows that the Irish Government are now taking an interest in the North which is very important as public services in the North had been decimated due to Tory austerity over many years. Cuts that were implemented by Sinn Féin and the DUP, lets not forget. If they didn't like them nobody was forcing them to be Whitehall's governors in Ireland.

Sinn Fein don't like making cuts. The British Government recently acknowledged that the North has been funded significantly below need then proceeded to demand revenue raising of £113 million from water charges/rates increases be introduced. If there was no Stormont assembly the British would just introduce them anyway. The bedroom tax was partially/fully mitigated by the Stormont assembly running. With direct rule there are no mitigations on whatever the British decide.

Were you ever down the M1? Casement is along side it. Can't wait for Ulster finals in it whether Tyrone's involved or not.

Aye and another DUP councillor was on saying the Irish government should have put €500 million into upgrading the road in Scotland. You couldn't make it up.

Missed a trick? It will be the deal of the century for the GAA. This stadium will be built given that the Government have announced 50million in funding for it. It will hard for the UK government to say no to matching that. And it has to be built for the Euros.

Yeah that is if it is built but the British Government don't want to fund it and the DUP at Stormont won't give any more money for it. If it is not built the GAA will lose out on a great opportunity.
