David Gough To Referee The Final

Replying To Dinosbar&grill:  "Yeah but as fans, we don't care if ref makes 'brave' decisons as we prefer correct ones (where possible , I know they can't be pefect). Same for 'evening it up' way of looking at it. We all respect consistency, He was not consistent there . Either O'Sullivans was a yellow or else no other similar tackles should have been. Judge the tackle as it was. Have just rewatched the game and to me it was a yellow card. Gough's take on things or being brave shouldn't come into making the correct decision."
He was consistent. He gave Johnny Cooper multiple chances and he only afforded Tom O'Sullivan the same.

The foul in question was actually a tickable offence as per the rule book while Johnnys second was technically a black card, i.e. deliberately pulling down an opponent. He had done the same to Sean O'Shea in the box during the lead up to Geaneys missed goal attempt in the early minutes of the game and gotten away with it.

Interesting to see that Ciaran Whelan backtracked today on his bizarre comments about the Cooper sending off at half time during the RTE coverage.

Don't think Cooper can have any complaints about sending off..but there was a huge difference in the reaction of the so called experts in relation to the penalty incident there was practically outrage when Keegan was pulled for a penalty against Donegal, yet when it involved Dublin the reaction is different and there was way more contact in the Keegan incident.

Cooper is a silly boy he is on every refs radar he will get away with nothing..Gavin should have moved him or replaced him with philly or COS.

Without a doubt. It was clear from the opening minutes that he was in trouble. Fitzsimons did a good job when he was moved on to Clifford. Jim Gavin nearly always gets these things right, presumably he thought he'd get to half time and reorganise things then.

Did he actualy make bizarre comments? Thought it was Brolly who made the possibly controversial comments - insinuating that Gough gave into the pressure to be harsh on Dublin.

All I saw CW say was that both men were trying to challenge for the ball and there was no need to stop play or book Cooper.

The penalty should have been retaken I agree.
However two things spring to mind.
1; How was he being inconsistent for that he would have to have awarded a penalty and a retake up the other end first.
2;He was actually being consistent as the decision to not award a retake was in line with all refereeing decisions in similar circumstances this season.

He tried to say Copper wasn't holding Cliffords arm...

Yeah I'm convinced that Gavin was waiting for the whistle to do a reshuffle. He had more than the Cooper decision to contend with, as Small, who also plays on the edge, was also carrying. I guess they were mulling over options just before Gough flashed the red. Taking off Cooper would have been a huge call so moving Fitz to Clifford was the obvious move.

Yeah I had the game recorded and watched it back, it was actually comical. It was right on the screen in front of him. He backtracked today on the radio saying that having looked at it again it was the correct decision. lol

Conor Lane is to referee All-Ireland final . Conor hails from the Banteer club on the kerry border and spends a lot of time in killarney due to businesses based in kerry. Surly the kerry mafia will speak out as Conor may be influenced due to his business interests and personal life in kerry?

Cooper had 5 fouls to Tom's 2 fouls, more fouls usually equal more cards.

Gough had a great game, all we wanted was a fair shot at it which we got, and that's all we want as well the next day.

I thought that Gough was excellent. Penalty was spot on - Cooper dragged at him to give Cluxton a clear run at the ball. Gavin should have moved Cooper then as it was his second foul on Clifford and he was clearly struggling on him. Many posters are complaining that O'Sullivan was not sent off - there was a lot of pressure on Gough to do it but he showed real strength of character to ignore the calls and apply the rule. O'Brien might have a penalty but Gough obviously felt he went down a bit too easily which was another big decision.
I'm not so sure how Lane will respond to the pressure that he will inevitably come under the next day.

Johnny Cooper fully deserved his second yellow card. He appeared to be just pulling and Jersey tugging and holding onto players from the onset. John small was lucky to remain on the field as he seemed to be on the same mission. Like another poster on here said... I'd imagine Jim Gavin would have made the switches at half-time but David Geough had his homework done on Dublin and rightly so.

Referees are now wise to Cooper, Keegan and a few more. Holding a guys jersey is not within the rules and should be a free in all day every day.

Yeah but he's from Cork who hates Kerry. He has been to the Zoo and Ikea; he prefers Sandymount to Ballybunion beach and has been known to travel on the Luas-there is no way he can be aloud to ref Kerry

Replying To riverboys:  "A piece on I think rte radio yesterday said in the past 5 or 6 years Dublin have had all the major calls in finals in their favour, Gough wasn't a ref in any of those finals and yesterday I think majority of people agree that Gough had a good game where major calls went 50/50, got an odd call wrong but far ahead of refs in other finals in the past 10 years, I'm afraid whoever gets the replay we already know the result 5 in a row, Gough is the best referee and other refs will get certain calls wrong and as well documented Dublin will get the major calls in their favour so expect the drive for 5 to succeed"
Further to Dublin getting the major calls, etc.

Brian Gavin, retired referee, states in today's Irish Examiner: I was at the 2011 final between these counties and what I couldn't get over was the amount of fouling by th the Dublin players off the ball.

So maybe the wind is finally changing?

Yes but is there not a case that not every foul has to be a yellow card? Players can inadvertently foul another while trying their best to genuinelly get the ball. Very fast games and physical games, very difficult to stop yourself making contact with someone when going at top speed to get to the ball first. I just don't think there was enough in Cooper's second yellow to be even considered a yellow. He tried to get there first and there was a bit of a coming together. A free, fair enough, but not a yellow. You may as well say to players on yellow cards, keep out of 50-50 challenges because if there is any bumping into your opponent, you'll be off.

It's a pity that it has taken 8 years for that statement to come out. But it just shows you what a bad reff like Dublin joe can do to a team. Like you say maybe refs are starting to cop on to Dublins off the ball antics now.
