Agreed, TG4 put the rest of them to shame with their excellent coverage all year round. Top class analysts on all broadcasts too.

All well and good if you understand what they're saying, but if you're like most of the population who haven't a clue what they're saying, then it's not so good!!

It's very common practice for broadcasters to geo block programmes. So complaining about rte not showing for people in Canada cant be a criticism of them Its cliched to say rugby was their main interest when they've nearly always shown more gaa than rugby in a calender year Just because the association doesnt pay players doesnt mean should be free to air. There isnt a or should be a link between the two KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3746 - 09/08/2019 12:38:21 2222998 Link 0 |
If I go to a live game, there's no commentary. I don't need a commentary - in English or Irish - to enjoy the game. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 09/08/2019 13:07:55 2223009 Link 4 |
I agree and most ppl are not interested in the pundits or their analysis either, they can make their own judgements on the game. The games could easily be shown at very little cost with modern technology.

The vast majority of people can understand enough to get what's going on in the game. Just because you can't doesn't mean that most can't. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13795 - 09/08/2019 14:13:59 2223033 Link 9 |
How could most of the 'real supporters' attend the game in Castlebar when the capacity was less than 20k, an All Ireland Quarter Final?

I agree, they should have a red button for English commentary like what s4c does in Wales

The attendance was in excess of 27,000. Mayo have the best supporters in the country. The game was televised.

Or maybe the Irish language can be forced upon people, to an extremely small extent, because it ain't gonna survive if it's not given special priority by the media in some broadcasts and in this instance, the English language isn't exactly necessary when you can see and understand everything that happens with the TV on mute.

I think some of the drop off in speaking Irish is to do with the huge inlux of technology media we've seen in the past 20 years and probably moreso the past 20 years and almost all English speaking. People read books less and less, in English or other languages. TV, Tablets, Phones, Laptops beaming us stuff through the internet that catches the imagination of out youth's. Somehow we need to come up with a way to get people young and old voluntarily interested in speaking Irish. Even kids out training having to speak as Gaeilge during the training sessions might be worth it but it's definitely easier said than done. Put the Cúl back into Cúlcamps and promote Irish and the GAA too.

If tg4 can't afford English commentary alongside the Irish why not a red button option just to mute the commentary and leave the crowd noise on, extra mics along the sideline just to hear the choice comments flying in. Far more entertaining. RTE should do the same, especially when Daragh and dessssssssie are on match duty Thelonesomegoose (Leitrim) - Posts: 204 - 09/08/2019 15:23:54 2223075 Link 2 |
How many people have Sky in rural Mayo or Donegal?

First If i came across that I'm anti-rugby I'm not I played rugby myself from u14 to u20. but you can't say in all honesty that RTE sports hadn't a preference for rugby, they promoted the hell out of rugby compared to soccer and gealic games, it was no coincidence that when RTE lost the rights to the 6 nations their head of sports left to go to another station. Fair enough broadcasters geo block programmes but the amount of young people that were forced to immigrate earlier this decade our 'state broadcaster' should have relaxed geo blocking for GAA, rugby and soccer games for people overseas who wanted to watch them it would have done no harm. Now i don't want to get away from the topic of discussion here, I would agree with your last point if the GAA was just simply an amateur organisations, it's alot more than that, the foundations of the association is based on grassroots and community volunteers, the GAA is giving nothing back to these people, the least they could do is let them see our games. Michael Duignan hit the nail on the head when he called it out on The Sunday Game a few years ago.

Would that not be a massive insult to all the commentators though as it would imply that RTE, or anyone else, thinks their awful and not worth listening to?

You'd get better punditry in the local from a lad that's been out since holy hour than the commentators on rte tv and their football sidekicks. Hurling pundits on live games are a bit better

Maith thú, well said. Give people the space and ability to interact through Irish and you'll see an uptake in it's usage. Just have a look at the popularity of the Pop Up Gaeltachts. It sticks in the craw of some that TG4 dare to "force" the language on them, but that's why they're here, to promote the language through their programming. I've said it on another thread but I thoroughly enjoy their coverage, and love the commentary and certain words in the context of a high pressure match. My favourite is definitely "botún!" in that Connemara accent! JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 09/08/2019 15:56:55 2223096 Link 0 |
Do you really need a commentator to tell you what you can see in front of you? Are you watching tg4 on radio?
