Influence Of Donie Buckley

Replying To CiarraiMick:  "It's up there now for discussion anyway. I was disappointed at the time to hear of Donie s departure and it was always going to be thrown back at Peter Keane when we lost. Now though to be fair while I'm not Keane s biggest supporter as a manager Donie s main influence in on defense and tackling etc and the Kerry defense played very well last Sun evening until the last second of extra time. So I'm not sure Donie Buckley influence would ve changed anything..What let us down the last day was an over reliance on defensive tactics imo. Now maybe if Donie was there things might be different. Who knows but we had Donie last year and twas our defending that let us down. Food for thought."
Credit to you for discussing it

Kerrys lack of discipline in the tackle was evident though and listen it's not like Cork offered very much going forward

Think they kicked the ball in once

Donie Buckley and Donie Buckley are the same person. Separate topic on Donnie Buckley.

I said at the time on the Kerry thread that Keane getting rid of Donie was a massive call that I didnt think was a good one. Buckley has done numerous sessions for my club down the years(Never looks for a penny) and is hands down on a different level to anything I have ever seen. Hes a genius and its come back to bite Keane in the hole. Was complete madness given someone with his ability the boot. Any team in the country would improve under him and he done a serious job with Mayo which they are still benefiting from.

Buckley by all accounts is a fine coach. Would be interesting to know what was it that caused him to leave. There must have been different philosophies or opinions on what he was trying to implement.
It hasn't always seemed in the last few years that the Kerry backroom team have all been entirely of the same opinion when it came to the big decision. It looked on occasion that Fitzmaurice was having some harsh words in his ear on the sideline. I remember seeing Murphy remonstrating with him and not looking to happy. You would wonder if it comes across to the players and how if any it effects their game. I'm sure there's plenty of disagreements in these groups in all counties but you usually don't see it on the line.

I wonder as a defensive coach is remit broader then tackling and shape, I wonder are things like transition out of defence worked on, timing of advanced runs, when to flood lines, kick out strategy etc.

The fouling is an interesting one, both teams were at it giving away "safe frees" as the opposition was about to attack the central channel. I think that impacted Kerry more as they never got up a head of steam or momentum as things became very stop start, curious one.

Wow. What a shocker you had. It wasn't a stroll last year for them, so why just assume it would be this year. I know Cork would be rightly underdogs, but it's no surprise they hit a tough game.

Wow. What a shocker you had. It wasn't a stroll last year for them, so why just assume it would be this year. I know Cork were rightly underdogs, but it's no surprise they had a tough game. Cork had not beaten Kerry for 8 years and a couple of times were more than awful, but there were some close contests there too. I never went into a Cork v Kerry game thinking we couldn't win. I know Kerry will beat us more than the other way round but I think down the years of the GAA Cork have given more competition to Kerry than anyone.

Well let's put it this way , as I have asked on another thread when was the last time a division 3 team knocked the division one champions out of the championship ? Let me know if you do.
I know Cork will always have a punchers chance against Kerry but it seemed pretty unlikely.
Cork have one hand on the Munster title now and it's all but in the bag once you've beaten Kerry and that's no disrespect to Tipp who may well prove too strong in the small ball face off this weekend. Enjoy the bragging rites while you can.

well Catch .Maybe you re answering your own question. It hardly ever happens if ever which just goes to prove that Kerry Cork games take on a life of their own.Its hard to understand when you not from either county.Even when Kerry had bad teams we fancied beating Cork and vice versa.I remember 1991 when Cork were going for 3 in a row for all Irelands and we beat them in Killarney with a very average team.we barely beat Limerick afterwards in a struggle.its a unique rivalry and some people kept saying Cork are div 3.Well they are promoted to the same division as Mayo who many f ancy could win sam.

Ya sure look Mick there's a rivalry no doubt and while the games do take on a life of their own it is not something that was likely if it never happened before and that's where I'm coming from. As for Mayo and Cork being in the same division, well that's just not where the teams were playing this year which is relevant and will only apply next year.
The outcome was largely down to Kerry's game plan, the poor conditions and a fortuitous and badly defended last gasp goal.
Another day it would have gone wide or been cleared and nobody would be talking about this utterly forgettable game apart from that score.
Mayo will take stopping alright and you wouldn't bet against them but I will wait before passing judgement on Cork for the minute.

I know what you mean catch and I like you am not sure about Cork yet either but that's my point.A Cork team that might not beat too many are always able to put it up to Kerry. I would say same of Galway Mayo to a lesser degree. Its that neighbour thing too like Tipp Kilkenny in hurling.

There are a lot of changes underway in Cork GAA in both hurling and football. S&C has improved massively. Training has improved from underage up to senior level. The footballers are All Ireland U17 and U20 championships. They're working on getting young coaches involved to improve their coaching and to identify young talent. There has always been great hurling and football talent in Cork and now intercounty hurling and football they are striving to work together where previously they may not have. It was a big shock result for many to see their footballers beat Kerry but not such a big shock to some in Cork GAA.

Not a shock to us in Kerry either. Many of us flagged the danger.

Long way to go for Cork GAA but definitely encouraging signs.
Really hope they continue to progress.
Always my 2nd favourite county and their fans bring great colour and atmosphere to games.
Always seemed to be a huge split between football and hurling down there and it didn't help matters. So hopefully that is now in the past.

Hurling number one in Cork and that won't change in the near future. When the footballers are going bad the crowds get very small whereas the hurlers always get great support. I recall Michael Shields a few years ago saying the footballers were playing a game in 2011 and there was only a few hundred at it and Cork were all ireland Champs at the time.

I have been at games v Cork footballers and hurlers and a bit of a difference in the numbers of Cork supporters at each alright.
Although I definitely recognised some supporters who attended both eg the dude with the Mexican sombrero. ;o)
