Horan's legacy was more important. Tomas O'Shea made a good point. We need to find some way of combining the League and Championship. 2 games in the summer does nothing for development. Hawkeye9212 (Donegal) - Posts: 266 - 20/10/2019 14:35:16 2244545 Link 0 |
No, I think not. If you really want to watch a game, you'll watch it.

But it be handy if you could understand the commentary. Would it not??

If I go to a game and sit in the stand, there's no commentary. It doesn't bother me If I watch a game on TG4, it doesn't bother me that the commentary is in Irish. For the avoidance of doubt, I don't speak much Irish. I certainly couldn't put a sentence together.. But I am learning a few words from TG4 to add to my vocabulary. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 20/10/2019 19:20:56 2244606 Link 2 |
At the moment counties use the League to have a look at new players for the c'ship. Once counties are knocked out of the c'ship and end up in this Shield competition, it may well be that they will now use that to look at young players to reinforce their squad for the League in the following Spring - in other words it could become an U21,22,23 competition. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 20/10/2019 19:27:43 2244609 Link 0 |
I was never a fan of this 2nd tier championship when I heard it was basically Tommy Murphy Cup 2.0, even though Galway are unlikely to be relegated to Div 3 any time soon. But I'm amazed counties who played in the TMC back in the day voted this through when they know how this kind of championship structure can become lifeless after a few years and not reduce a gap with the big counties eoghan6688 (Galway) - Posts: 159 - 20/10/2019 19:52:19 2244616 Link 0 |
Agreed. I had o level Irish anyway; football commentary, in any language, is hardly rocket science to understand.

Ahh goin to a game is different. You involved. Watching two teams play who you probably don't know the players. You need to understand it imo

Big fan of a two tier championship, not a big fan of the way this is implemented, essentially its keeping the problem of teams playing noncompetitive games in the provincials and then entering a different championship, its of no benefit to teams or the game in general. Change without any change really. Wasnt worth bothering with for the end result. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4501 - 21/10/2019 09:28:27 2244706 Link 1 |
This two tier championship just doesn't make any sense. The games that are not competitive tend to be in the early provincial rounds in all provinces. The qualifiers especially the first couple of rounds tend to be very competitive with counties involved trying to test themselves against the bigger names later on with the hope that they make improvements and can get into to that last 8. It's going to be like any competition where only a small number in any year have a chance of winning. What the powers that be want is just for the same names every year featuring to get the sponsorship and viewing figures. The inter county game is on it's last legs for many. The organisation has completely lost it's way. RoverTin (Derry) - Posts: 228 - 21/10/2019 11:20:39 2244729 Link 1 |
Agree 100%. The Tier 2 championship structure is even worse than the Tommy Murphy version. As for the advanced mark, this will only encourage defensive football and make the game even more like Aussie Rules. A free shot at goal for catching the ball into your midriff!! Rediculous.

I don't know what the answer is but a 2nd class championship won't do if nobody puts any value in winning it, Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3172 - 21/10/2019 12:33:28 2244750 Link 0 |
I just can't see Clare agreeing to merge with Kerry!

Around half the teams in the Kerry SFC are Divisional teams - East Kerry, South Kerry, West Kerry etc, and take their pick from a selection of clubs within their designated division. Looks like three divisional teams into the last four this year. The system seems to work well for them in bringing through talent from smaller clubs.

How do you qualify for the 2nd tier competition? Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1467 - 21/10/2019 15:07:37 2244799 Link 1 |
In my opinion the best format would be an open draw champions league style competition. rightsaidfred (Meath) - Posts: 10 - 21/10/2019 15:51:30 2244811 Link 0 |
I think you give the competition more meaning than what it will get. The vast majority of counties won't give any thought or analysis to the games. It's more likely managers will ask the Friday before a match who is available and trek to the field with barely 15 players.
