I think it is given the counties what they want, people make a mistake in thinking because they don't like it as fans that players don't like - not so. BTW the GPA represents themselves (a narrow band of "elite" players) the GPA doesn't represent the players or the GAA end off, their primary goal is to screw the GAA for as much money as they can get. The counties involved asked the GAA for this, they voted for it, so if fans are unhappy take it up with their own county boards. Finally someone is listening, if players do not want to play in it, don't worry plenty in each county to replace them and in time it will be as much a part of summer as it always has been. A chance for these counties to develop and grow without the suffocating demands of Senior 1 Inter-county sucking the life out out of the counties in question. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4953 - 19/10/2019 18:28:48 2244420 Link 0 |

Said it before the football is dead in some counties and has now been given the last rites. Hurling is also dead in certain counties and probably got the last rites some time ago. Is anyone naive enough to think that the GAA will put any thing into the weak counties, second tier teams, Tom Murphy cup 2 what ever you like to call it. Follow the money. Again "follow the moneyeeeee"

It's good news. And linking it to the league is correct. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2926 - 19/10/2019 19:35:48 2244433 Link 1 |
Absolutely, no one asked players or management in my county what they wanted, as far as I'm aware. I know the would say no like they did today..

Just to everyone condemning today's decision what alternative are you suggesting? Keeping the status quo which was a dead duck in my view or an alternative format? bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 19/10/2019 20:05:08 2244438 Link 0 |
You think it's bad now????

Well no matter what you or the few serial malcontents and knuckledraggers say the counties wanted it and voted for it time to move on.

Perhaps give Virgin these matches, they might put good coverage into it, RTE definitely won't, and TG4 is in Irish so you lost the neutral fan there DuhallowRed (Cork) - Posts: 309 - 19/10/2019 20:18:18 2244447 Link 0 |
Do you honestly think county teams will grow playing against themselves in a straight knockout competition that will be won by teams relegated from Division Two ? The games will be played in front of empty stadia with minimal coverage. Half of the countries teams have now been thrown in to a Joe McDonagh Cup. Congress has once again shown itself up for the brainless gathering it is .

Wait until the Fixtures Review release their proposals.

Complete joke. It will collapse. I'm all in favour of a second tier. But for it to have any prestige, teams must enter it from the start of the year, not fall through a trapdoor into it. Its like when you have "the shield" in kids games. I expect mass exodus of players when provincial end . If the GAA had day down and said let's think of a proposal that will send players to America , this is it. In fact by basing it on this year's league , the GAA is effectively saying "we want to give you a chance to avoid this crap competition" Malonemagic (Laois) - Posts: 817 - 19/10/2019 20:42:47 2244454 Link 0 |
An article on this website quoting Horan saying Leitrim and Wicklow approached him to create this comp, was that players or boards, and what did they say? fairly_shook (Leitrim) - Posts: 15 - 19/10/2019 20:43:33 2244455 Link 0 |
TG4 being in Irish wouldn't put anyone off who wanted to watch it. If there's a GAA game on the telly and you're interested in it, you'll watch it even if it's in Klingon.

8 of the counties that will be involved in it voted against it. Grand for division 1 teams to vote for it when it's nothing to do with them. The qualifiers were a great way of the weaker counties getting a run. Now there will be no chance for many counties of championship. Imagine drawing Dublin in leinster and then you are thrown into the losers cup. Off to the states for loads of div 3,4 players. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1536 - 19/10/2019 20:57:58 2244458 Link 0 |
This is definitely the end for the weaker counties. Whatever about competing with the likes of Dublin, Kerry, Tyrone before, there wont be even an opportunity for it now and players in said tier 2 counties will fall away from county football in droves. I cant believe on how lopsided the whole game has got... just over 20 years ago you could say anyone on any given day could give the likes of Dublin or Kerry a game, the bumper crowds at championship games at smaller venues, the atmosphere. Teams like Leitrim winning connacht in 1994, Offaly winning leinster in 1997, these will be be long distant memories now. its a pity but i suppose it shows in general the way the country is going at the moment, the Big get bigger and the small are getting smaller and thrown to the side. preddan (Kildare) - Posts: 794 - 19/10/2019 21:05:12 2244460 Link 1 |
I reckon the teams in nexts season division 2 will be looking to be relegated and the teams in division 3 will be looking to be not promoted so the will be able to play in this new all ireland championship. It will realisticlly be the only chance some of these counties have of ever winning an all Ireland championship. edu (Mayo) - Posts: 99 - 19/10/2019 21:37:58 2244464 Link 1 |
The GAA will never get any awards for innovation; another rehashed competition that will do nothing for weaker counties except create a bigger gap between top teams and those further down the pecking order; looked at how poorly structured the hurling championship is, no coverage, no interest from media, need I say more. I mean wicklow ran kildare close in this years championship while longford and carlow have done really well in championship and qualifiers in recent years. Dublin are way ahead in leinster but there isn't much between the rest. I fully agree with the weaker counties that were against it; they have read it right. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2091 - 19/10/2019 21:40:35 2244465 Link 1 |
