Interesting weekend of voting coming up. How will the delegates of a predominantly hurling county like Tipp vote, will they take consideration the concerns of the footballers who are in Div 3 & vote against proposals for Tier 2 or just vote for it to keep the football down. Will the Congress delegates be influenced by the top table, will anyone have the guts to ask why the decision wasn't left till the Fixtures Schedule Committee finished & published their report. moc.dna (Galway) - Posts: 1212 - 18/10/2019 00:52:17 2244163 Link 1 |
You would hav so many hammerings in that it would be absolutely pointless

Breheny's article in the independent on this was very good. I hope it's voted down. It's only common sense to wait for the fixtures task force to finish their work. It's so transparently being pushed through so that Horan can have his legacy. That's completely the wrong motivation for meaningful change. I agree 100% this is not the time for this and this is not the proper structure to go with, hopefully it'll be voted down.

how come the Rugby are not on about a tier 2 world cup they have perhaps 4 countries that can have any chance, a super 4 if you like, ireland can't even score against nz by the looks of it, no shame, but we are not at their level. Maybe the GAA are trying too hard to keep the provincial thing going, the provinces are holding a real tier 2 back maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1226 - 19/10/2019 12:20:52 2244341 Link 1 |
you cannot have the provincial championship and the 2 tier approach, said this for years. which system make the most money? suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1728 - 19/10/2019 14:11:30 2244360 Link 1 |
This competition will last about two years. But it will mean the elites pull further away. A sad day for the GAA. The turkeys have voted for Christmas. fairly_shook (Leitrim) - Posts: 15 - 19/10/2019 15:27:28 2244374 Link 3 |
I've never been a supporter of a tiered football championship and I'd cast a very skeptical eye on what's to come. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 19/10/2019 16:12:17 2244385 Link 1 |
A snub to weaker counties so the GAA & Sky can have more matches between the likes of Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone, Donegal etc. This is destined to fail, just look at the 'promotion' the Joe McDonagh cup gets in hurling. M Lyster (Antrim) - Posts: 465 - 19/10/2019 16:40:50 2244392 Link 0 |
And I'll bet none of the county delegates who voted for it asked any of their senior panels for their thoughts on it. The top brass are so far removed from grassroots now that it's worrying fairly_shook (Leitrim) - Posts: 15 - 19/10/2019 16:51:40 2244394 Link 0 |
Yeah in total agreement with that. How many times will we have tommy Murphy version tried before they get the hint. IT WONT WORK. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 19/10/2019 16:53:40 2244395 Link 0 |
Very disappointed that this particular tier-2 format got voted in. That said, next year's Division Two and Three leagues will have some very high stakes matches. Not just relegation/promotion, but also places in the Sam Maguire at stake. offyertrolley (Leitrim) - Posts: 141 - 19/10/2019 16:57:12 2244397 Link 0 |
Not sure if this is the solution but keeping things as the status quo would have been the worst option in my view, I'm willing to give this a go and see what happens bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 19/10/2019 16:58:09 2244398 Link 0 |
Can hear a lot of tickets for the states being booked by players for next summer as a result of this decision. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1536 - 19/10/2019 17:11:05 2244405 Link 1 |
I can't see players really caring to play in this. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4503 - 19/10/2019 17:19:27 2244406 Link 3 |
Very sad day imo. GAA getting rid of the nuisance that are the div 3/4 teams otherwise known as the weaker counties. Players in these teams, make the same sacrifices that players from Dublin, Kerry etc. Now, they are going to in a second rate competition. Many will view the sacrifice not worth it. The media and TV coverage will view it, not to be worth it. The GAA will not spend to promote it. Players will now concentrate on their clubs and or head to America, where they will be better treated, than their own organisation at home. The best players within the county, will not be representing their counties, thus the standards will fall, while your larger county teams play each other on more regular basis and thus, keep improving. The gap will grow. This is nothing more, than a financial decision. I cannot understand how delegates from counties like my own could vote for this. There was no proper research conducted as to how it work properly. The obviously reason for these delegates voting in such a way, is that their county board will be rewarded for their loyalty....look at how Joe mcdonagh cup, nick rackard cup etc are treated......bad day all round!!! It's a joke, Sky will probably ignore Tommy Murphy 2 completely, whereas worse still RTE will pay it the lipiest of all lip service, probably throw together a few condescensing packages hailing TMC2 as the best thing to ever happen Div3 & 4 teams. But that will only last a couple of weeks, even the lip service will stop and there'll be just nothing then. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 19/10/2019 17:44:29 2244409 Link 2 |
Radical thought, but what about having the prize for the new tier 2 championship be the Sam Maguire Cup. Let the Big boys fight for a new unamed Premier Cup. Juniorbleague (Westmeath) - Posts: 33 - 19/10/2019 18:00:23 2244414 Link 1 |
Sadly it won't last for 2 years it's here to stay. Future television and sponsorship deals both at central and county level will be signed on the basis of a tier Championship. This is the GAA's solution to the Dublin problem; Dublin and the GAA don't want to interfere with the finance Dublin are able to generate so have set up a system whereby the Mayo's, Kerry's, Tyrone's of this world can sign hugely lucative deals. If there is a guarantee these counties will have significant media coverage every year playing blockbuster games in front of big crowds it opens up healthly financial streams on a medium/long term basis. If tier two fails they'll try to move around the deck chairs, set up committees, consultations etc on how to improve it. But what will never be allowed to change from now is the Tier 1 Championship, too many contracts will be attached to that competition. It's a bad day for weaker/medium ability counties but a great day for the top brass and finanical state of the stronger counties. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 19/10/2019 18:01:55 2244415 Link 0 |
Let's hope it will get a proper name and not a (insert name) Cup, call the trophy after someone but not the competition, has anyone a suggestion of a name? How about Championship 2, I think someone mentioned that name before here do I'll them the credit DuhallowRed (Cork) - Posts: 309 - 19/10/2019 18:22:06 2244418 Link 0 |
