The top class coaching, huge drive and hunger for success mixed with good breeding has always produced top class hurlers in the small village of Ballyhale. They absolutely live for hurling in the parish. A new generation has come through now and I think they will deliver a few more club all Irelands over the next 10 years. Yeah its some club. No to it about it. Robert Plomin has wrote a book called 'Blueprint' which challenges the modern notion that nurture has as much impact in an individual as nature. His studies show that it doesn't matter how we are brought up our genes will 95% decide how we will turn out . The only caveat is that our childhood must not have a catastrophic episode. With that attitude, it's good for Limerick you weren't a member of their management team this year cos they wouldn't have won the All Ireland!!! I'm being abit broad but the statistics are there . Nicky Quaid is the grandson of Jack Quaid who played for years with Limerick, along with his twin brother Jim and on the other side his Grace granfather played with Kilkenny. Of course his father Tommy was an Al Star goalkeeper as was his first cousin Joe. Sean Finns father, Brian, captained Limerick to a National League win in 1992, Ritchie McCarthy's Granduncle was an All Ireland winning full back in '34 and '36. All Richie Englishe's uncles, the Fitzgibbons, were too class hurlers and one of their sons Darragh is the current All Star Cork midfielder.. Declan Hannon is a scion of the famous Stakelum and Ryan families of Borrisoleigh and Tipp fame. Cian Lynch is a nephew of Ciarian Carey an All Star center back and his grandfather and grand uncle also played with Limerick.. Gearoid Hegarty is the son of an All Ireland hurler Ger as is Seamus Flanagan. Kyle Hayes is a great grand nephew of Mickey Cross one of the greatest wing backs Limerick, or indeed anywhere else ever produced, He played in no less than five All Ireland Finals and played wing back in a top class team for fifteen years and Ger Mulcahy, my nomination all day long for hurler of the year is the nephew of a fine Limerick corner back Donie Barry. I would particularly fear both Waterford and your own county, although any of the big three, Clare, Dublin or Wexford could pose a huge threat. We can only look forward with renewed hope. But lets stick to the sport aspect - do you therefore think that anyone who does not have 'pedigree' should refrain from aspiring to competing at the top level? Genetics are a huge part in determining life outcomes. We are only scimming the surface. To answer your question. I think everyone should or can aspire to compete at the highest level. Some without 'pedigree' as you say might indeed get there. But those with pedigree will have a much higher chance of getting there. That's basic stuff.
