Are St Thomas the favourites for this one?

Yes they are favourites and deserve to be. I think Mellows are slightly better than they were last year but I expect Thomas's to come out on top by a few points. Thomas's improved a lot from last week and I think they are capable of raising it another notch.

A clash of the previous two Callanan Cup winners, am I right?

As regards NAPs injuries I think Lynchs are just soft tissue (incidentally he had a fine game again, spraying some great passes, showing fine positional sense and hitting three great long range scores). I would be certain Shane will not play in the final and it could be either way with Kieran. I thought CLonoulty looked poor, but few clubs would have lived with NAP today. They could have at least three more goals in the first fifteen minutes alone and looked in charge almost from the word go. It will take a fair team to stop them.

Favorites? Hard to say. Mellows are the defending county champs but Thomas's are the form team this season. I'd give the slightest edge to St Thomas's.

problem with the club championship is it is played at the worst time of year for hurling.the best team in the country can always be brought down to a hacking match by a bunch of tough, dogged battlers. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 05/11/2018 10:13:48 2149596 Link 0 |
Perfect10 I always think Oulart took longer than they should have to win a Leinster title, but they also took an awful long time to win their first title in Wexford in 94. They had fine teams in the 70s', 80s' and early 90s', but they just came short on many occasions and the same thing happened thereafter in Leinster. The same happened with Patrickswell in Munster. They were so often the second best team in the province, but never won an All Ireland. This may be due to the fact that they did not get out in their provimce often enough. Hard to argue with that. Went very much as expected. NAP are a professional very well resourced outfit. Their underage teams are treated like intercounty panels. Tipp have too many senior teams and too many backdoors. The structure needs to be looked at. The last few cship changes have been a joke really. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 05/11/2018 18:04:02 2149709 Link 0 |
was the old system years ago where you had the four divisions in Tipp and the top two in each played their divisional final leaving 8 teams left in total for quarter finals....there seems to be a lot of games now between north, south, west and mid teams before even a divisional final is played...the old north final used to be a great occasion and it meant something too to win it..i remember when I was small a rip roaring game between Newport and Lorrha in 1996 in nenagh with 7 or 8 thousand at it

Yeah, I'd agree with that. It was straightforward to follow, four divisions, with the eight divisional finalists, make county quarter-finals. There are definitely too many senior clubs in Tipp too, you see the knock-on effect of it by how poorly our intermediate and junior champions do in Munster too.

Are you saying Ballygunner and Ballyea are mediocre teams then? I think you are underestimating both of them. Ballygunner have a good spine with O'Keefe, Coughlan, Wayne Hutchinson, and the two Mahonys. Jack Browne, Tony Kelly, Deasy, and Gary Brennan are not half bad either.

agree with you Oldtourman, they were symptomatic of wexford in the 70s 80s and 90s too. now having said that, they did have rathnure and buffers alley who were just better then them in those decades. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 07/11/2018 08:56:30 2150002 Link 0 |
In their counties they are top sides obviously. I think ballygunnar have some very good hurlers but lack size and athletic ability. It's the opposite for Ballyea..they have some terrible hurlers but are big and strong.. They have Kelly and few more and great honesty but they are a mediocre side.

Can anyone here tell me, at what time was the original fixture between Ballyboden and Clonkill supposed to take place last Sunday? PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 2017 - 07/11/2018 19:14:06 2150104 Link 1 |
That was some game between Ballygunner and Ballyea...great hurling! Love to see St. Thomas' v Ballygunner in the All Ireland Club Semi Final if they both win their next matches!!

hi pool sturgeon the game was fixed for 2pm. I had a similar accum and its states clearly on website that its is void if it is not playedwithin 48 hours. It states clearly on website. you are a 100 percent to collect. Back to the games the all Ireland hurling is a fantastic competion that gets better every year.

I'm pretty sure the Galway champs are playing the Ulster winners in this year's semi final.

That is correct. Hopefully they will meet in the All Ireland Club Final then.

Thanks hocles for that. What particularly enraged me is that the same company invoked that 48 hour rule 6 months ago when I was expecting to collect on a winning bet on a game that was postponed for 7 days. They only refunded me my stake money then....now they are attempting to get away with waiving the same rule when it has worked against them. Yes it's a great competition. Hard to figure out yet who will be collecting the trophy on St. Patrick's Day. At this stage I'd say NAP. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 2017 - 07/11/2018 23:12:26 2150138 Link 1 |
