Lord help us. If that is the case then Portlaoise has loads of clubs, Emo, Clonad, Portlaoise and The Heath to name four.

Correct browncows there are essentially 4 clubs in navan when you include walterstown as a large area of navan is in the walterstown parish. As for the comment below about simonstown not being in navan well that's hard to believe really it is bang on the middle of navan!

Fair enough you know Navan better than I do I'm sure but I thought Simonstown was out near Proudstown on the way to the race course? That would not be the centre of Navan.

Some poster mentioned that Laois would not have won the Leinster Senior Football title in 2003 without Barry Brennan. Not true. He contributed handsomely with a point as a late sub. We won the game by 3 however, with the other late points from Ian Fitzgerald and Donal Miller, neither of whom have any Carlow connections. The 1986 Laois winning team, I want to run through it as a poster said there were 5 Carlow players on it, which is incorrect. BliainanÁir (Laois) - Posts: 598 - 01/10/2018 23:07:53 2144711 Link 0 |
Was there not an attempt years ago to start a second GAA club in Portlaoise but people simply didnt want anything to do with it and it died a death? tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1487 - 02/10/2018 10:08:19 2144725 Link 0 |
Curly and Noel are from Bagenalstown but played for Portlaoise where they lived at the time. Christy and Willie are from Carlow town, Pascal Doran was injured and didn't play in the final is from Tinryland. There's your 5. Nuff said. You haven't gotten a single fact right yet so back to work with now making up your fantasy population projections. Good lad.

Why do so many lads born and bred in Carlow want to play for Laois? the_walls (Mayo) - Posts: 497 - 04/10/2018 11:49:46 2145093 Link 0 |
Long story and and I won't go into it as it'll only start another row with the Planters about both history and geography. Suffice to say there's a long running dispute over Graiguecullen which won't be settled until that club is forced to play in Carlow again. I could ask why do so many lads from Ballaghadereen want to play for Mayo? Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1552 - 04/10/2018 15:56:42 2145143 Link 0 |
Isn't there only one club in Clonmel? A bigger town? They are split in 2 for the 2 codes but isn't there only the one club? Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 04/10/2018 16:24:24 2145149 Link 0 |
Tbh if I was from anywhere in Carlow I would still want to play for laois.

How many underage sides per age group do Portlaoise field? Surely easiest way for a new club to be set up in town is start with new club(s) at underage level? DonaldDuck (Tipperary) - Posts: 544 - 04/10/2018 16:44:03 2145154 Link 0 |
But from going through the thread it doesn't seem to be just players from Graiguecullen, which I understand, they are playing in Laois. Maybe I've taken it up wrong but you seem to be making the point that you are losing lads from all over Carlow who are any way decent and have a family connection to Laois. I can't understand why they are not choosing their own county. As for Ballagh, it's a Mayo club and has always been a Mayo club but I would be in favour of letting people from Ballagh choose whether they want to represent Mayo or Roscommon. the_walls (Mayo) - Posts: 497 - 05/10/2018 12:38:06 2145271 Link 0 |
2 clubs in enniscorthy, split geographicaly by the slaney. Rapparees/Starlights on one side and Shamrocks on the other side but the Rocks have been struggling for a few years to be honest. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1487 - 05/10/2018 18:30:11 2145301 Link 0 |
Shamrocks over past Treacys is it?? Where is the pitch? All my years going to Enniscorthy I never even heard of them!! Starlights/Raparees have some set up there now, superb place. Would be familiar with the Dorans, a good GAA name in Wexford! Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 06/10/2018 14:55:07 2145366 Link 0 |
Out past Treacy's and turn off to the right off the oulart rod up past rectory heights housing estate, literally sitting directly underneath vinegar hill beside senans primary school. The club has struggled to be honest and tend to lose players to the rapps/starlight's, Declan Ruth ex Wexford hurler was originally a Rock's player for example. Yep bellfield is a fine set up for the rapps/stars, town teams are getting stronger with the exception of Ross which is always a good sign for the county, faythe harriers beat the rapps today in u17 premier final today in what was a cracking game of hurling. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1487 - 06/10/2018 22:45:30 2145394 Link 0 |
When the Ballaghadereen club was formed in the 1880's the land boundary of the area was in Co. Mayo, however a landlord got that area changed at a later dater into the County Roscommon boundary for financial reasons. Obviously the GAA club was not going to follow suit, hence Ballaghdereen to this day plays their football in Mayo. All clubs have history based on varying factors

Thanks for that. Not quite the same as Graigecullen then who currently are and always were in county Carlow. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1552 - 07/10/2018 20:44:04 2145465 Link 0 |
I think Matt Connor was born in Portarlington Hospital in Laois

Is it just Carlow footballers who seem to have the inclination and desire to play football for Laois, or does it also happen in hurling? Perhaps, it's vice-versa for hurling?
