Left Footers

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Brendan Devenney made an interesting comment recently when he said that good left footed players have a sweeter strike of a ball than normal. He was referring to Ciaran Thompson who has landed a fair few beauties from range in this year's league. Certainly in Donegal we have a history of great left footed players playing for the county. Colm McFadden, Paddy McBrearty, Adrian Sweeney, Declan Bonner etc.

Outside Donegal, I think Paul Finlay had a wand of a left peg. Padraic Joyce and Ciaran McDonald as well.

Who would be your favourite left footers?

In full flight Declan O Sullivan for Kerry was magic, his right was not too bad either.

our Unionist friends in the north think we're all left footers. I keep telling them just because I couldn't hit a barn door with the right that doesn't make me a lefty!

He had a lot of power alright but zero subtlety. When he did score from range the goals were spectacular but they were few and far between.

Colm O'Neill and Odhran MacNiallais are another two worth mentioning.

Not get away from the GAA theme but in soccer the best left footers I have seen were Hagi, Stoichkov and Mihajlovic. All from Eastern Europe funnily enough!

Those 3 were quality. Alvaro Recoba (Probably not the same level of player as the ones you mentioned) had the best left foot I've ever seen. Honourable mention for Adriano and Rivaldo too. I've gone all south american there....

Declan O'Sullivan had a great right foot for a left footed player. Most left footed players tend to have a poor right foot apart from the odd really exceptional talent.

Kevin Mcloughlin is a great accurate passer with the left peg and scores the odd point as Tyrone know to their cost. Our own Gearoid McKiernan is not too bad either. Darran O' Sullivan (is he left footed... ???). Paddy Bradley from derry. Jack McCarron of Monaghan.

Mihajlovic had a magic wand for a left foot.

Yeah McCarron has that same languid technique Finlay had. I think it was against Tyrone this year he nailed a sideline ball. A peach of a score!

Declan O'sullivan had quality in either foot. Brilliant player.

Speaking of Brazilians with dynamite in their left boots.

Here is former left back Branco knocking Murdo McLeod out cold with a free kick at the 1990 World Cup!

He might not be as exotic as the Sth Americans the Eastern Europeans but Chris Brunt has a left foot like a traction engine.

Diarmuid Connolly :D

I know a lot of other left footers and they had a couple of decent results themselves lately :D

All these 'continental' and 'SA" lefties mentioned wouldn't make it in our game. Sure no one is marking them half the time they play the ball. Ha!
