Armagh demolished Down with a 3-33 to 0-14 victory in Clones this afternoon to move into their fourth successive Ulster senior football championship final.
Kieran McGeeney’s side were relentless against their neighbours, who shocked Donegal in Letterkenny last weekend, as they dominated from the moment Tomás McCormack’s shot hit the Mourne men’s net in the 15th minute.
From there, the Orchard men outscored Down by 0-7 to 0-1 over the next quarter of an hour before Conor Turbitt netted their second goal.
The scoreline at half-time would read 2-12 to 0-7 and it got worse for Conor Laverty’s team after the change of ends, with Turbitt (free), Andrew Murnin, Darragh McMullen (two-pointer) and the excellent Jason Duffy increasing the Armagh lead to 16.
Ryan Magill got a point back for the trailers ahead of five more unanswered scores sailing over their crossbar and Turbitt would get in for his side’s third goal in the 57th minute.
Liam Kerr registered Down’s 10th point on an afternoon to forget for the Mourne men prior to long distance efforts from Oisin O’Neill and Aaron O’Neill helping to round off Armagh’s remarkable tally.
The result means that McGeeney’s side progress to an Ulster final date with Monaghan in Clones in two weeks’ time, while Down are now bound for the Tailteann Cup where they’ll face Leitrim in Round 1 following Westmeath’s extra time victory over Kildare in the Leinster semi-finals earlier today.
