Many tributes have been paid to former Down footballer Marty Lynch who has lost his battle with Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The popular Newry man captained the Mourne County to an Ulster U21FC title in 1984 and played county senior for a few years thereafter. He also won a Down IFC medal with his club St John Bosco in 1996. Survived his wife Rosie, sons Ryan and Kenneth and grandchildren, Marty was also a talented cyclist and triathlete.

Following his diagnosis, a major fundraiser called Legends4Lyncho and involving former Down and Armagh football stars took place last July.

A post on the Legends4Lyncho Facebook page yesterday read: “It is with great regret that we learn of Marty’s passing today. Legend is an often-used word but in Marty’s case it was totally justified - thank you all for supporting Marty and his raising awareness of MND - rest in peace dear friend.”

St John’s Bosco GAC said: “Very sad news this morning. Rest in peace Marty, a true legend and will be sorely missed.”
