Pete McGrath after Down's 1994 All-Ireland SFC final victory over Dublin

Fans hailed Down All-Ireland winning manager Pete McGrath as he starred in the latest episode of Laochra Gael on TG4 last night.

McGrath oversaw the Mourne men's Sam Maguire Cup triumphs in 1991 and 1994, steering the ship of his native county for 13 years consecutive years between 1989 and 2002. From there he would go on to have managerial stints with Fermanagh and Louth and is currently managing his home club Rostrevor.

Last night’s latest instalment of the popular GAA series showed how The Troubles in Northern Ireland affected the GAA community during the early part of McGrath’s tenure and how he went on to guide Down to its fourth and fifth All-Ireland SFC crowns.
