Aodh Ruadh club notes

October 23, 2018

Football

Aodh Ruadh opened their under 21 championship campaign with a trip to Towney last Sunday, seldom an easy assignment. Peter Boyle's charges made light of history though and recorded a good 2-17 to 1-7 victory over Kilcar to secure their progression. Next up for the Ballyshannon lads is another trip, this time on Saturday to take on Killybegs. The game throws in down in Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park at 3pm. Get yourself down there and get behind this exciting young team.

Following victory over Ardara last week, the Aodh Ruadh under 13s entertained Termon in the county Division 1 quarter-final under the lights at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Monday evening. Aodh Ruadh played against the breeze in the first half and went in at the break leading by four points. The Ernesiders took advantage of the wind in the second half to run out 6-11 to 2-10 winners. Robbie Murphy, Tommy Clyne and Shane Delahunty were among the goal scorers, while further back Aonghus Sweeny and James Gallagher both put in good shifts in defence.

The under 11s travelled to a blitz in Ballybofey last Saturday with 20 players, allowing Aodh Ruadh to field two teams. The reserves were excellent right through and defeated Glenfin in the final of their competition. Meanwhile the seniors had a superb tournament too and only lost the A final by a point to MacCumhaill's. There is training for under 12s and under 11s this Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh

Last Friday saw the finals of The Ballyshannon Shoe Company under 10  Winter League. The Shield Final saw Tomás Keown's team playing Jayden McGrath Clyne team. Tomás's team were the underdogs in this game, but had being improving in each game. It was all tied up at four points each at half-time. However Tomás's team struck a purple patch in the second half to win out by three points. Jayden and his lads put in a great performance over the four games and they can be proud of their league. In the battle of the manager's it was a case of Cavan Paul beating the Wild Roper from Rossnowlagh.

In the Cup final it was Bobby Melly's side taking on Joe Gibbions team. It was Bobby's team who lead by a point at half-time. Then in the second half after some great passing and link up play from both sides it was all square at 10 points each. It really was end to end stuff in a tension-filled second half. That meant it was on to four minutes extra-time. In the end it was Joe's team who edged out a three point to win. Joe deserves great credit for showing his character as captain, getting the second  point in extra time to steady the game. Bobby Melly pulled off some great saves during the game,  just like he has being doing all year long. That meant in the clash of the manager's  Border Fox Andy won out over Buncrana Nichols.

Gus Culkin of Ballyshannon Shoe Company was on hand to do the presentation. Seamus  Roper thanked the parents / guardians for all their help throughout the year and thanked Niall McCready for refereeing  the finals. William Doogan also thanked Gus for sponsorship.  Thanks were also extended to Paul, Nichols, Andy, Niall and Michael Ward for coaching during the year. It has being a great year with a fantastic group  of lads whose football skills improved a lot not to mention their confidence in general. They had great manners and respect to all mentors and referees at all times and  represented  their club and families extremely well during 2018. We enjoyed coaching ye all.

Ladies

Well done to the Coláiste Cholmcille under 16 girls who won all their five games in Convoy at last Tuesday's blitz.

The under 13 girls Joe Roper memorial cup competition started on Monday evening. The teams were selected earlier in the week and were as follows.

Team 1: Manager Antoin McGloin, Captain - Fódhla Sheerin, Vice Captain - Niamh Irwin, Eve Flood, Aisling Patton, Dairín Sweeny, Mollie Travers, Kelly Irwin, Cameron Gallagher, Megan Kane.

Team 2: Manager - Sandra Sheerin, Captain - Michaela McCaffrey, Vice Captain - Ava Doherty, Shauna McGloin, Saoirse Daly, Cádhla Dolan, Orlaith Toland, Jodie Meade, Annie Keon, Niamh McNulty.

Team 3: Manager - Thomas O’Brien, Captain - Catherine Browne, Vice Captain - Orlaith Gallagher, Aimee Roper, Cara Davitt, Orlaith O’Neill, Christina McCafferty, Lauren Foy, Niamh McGloin.

In first match Michaela McCaffrey's Team 2 played Catherine Brown's Team 3. Despite a positive start by Michaela’s team, they were marginally beaten in a very competitive game.  Unfortunately the luck of the draw meant the beaten team then had to remain on the pitch and play the second match against Fódhla Sheerin's Team 1. After another tight contest Fódhla's team came out on top. The next matches will take place on Monday, November 5th.

Congratulations to Megan Kane and Annie Keon who donned the county colours for the first time at an under 13 inter-county blitz in Cookstown on Saturday.
