Counties Missed Opportunities.... - 15 Like(s)
Replying To Breezy: "What in god's name you talking about I comment on many thread that have nothing to do with Kerry.i only talk about Kerry once ye have ruined another thread with your anti Dub stuff" You often get involved and throw handy digs at Kerry and then want to accuse others of ruining threads etc. Look in the mirror my good man. You are every bit as bad as any poster on here, and a hypocrite on top of it.

Keeping The Gaa Amateur And Sensible Commitment Levels - 15 Like(s)
Ireland is too small to support a professional indigenous sport, and GAA has limited commercial appeal to other markets.
Going semi-pro through a version of the existing player grants scheme might be possible but I can't see fully professional players in GAA in the foreseeable future.
There is certainly an argument that the training schedules and overall demands on players are now unsustainable. The problem is that it only takes one or two counties to implement near professional levels of preparation and that sets the bar for everyone. If you don't follow suit you get left behind and won't be able to compete.

Sean Boylan Vs Jim Gavin - Who Is The Greatest? - 15 Like(s)
Replying To TheUsername: "Very well written articulate post. I don't agree with it much however.
There is a difference in having a defensive system and playing a blanket defence. 15 men behind the ball for the majority of the game is different to having corner forwards covering. Dublin have hybrid players, players who can play across the lines, both offensively and decisively. We have very offensive defenders, McCaffery, Murch, McCarthy, Cooper, Philly. It underlines my point in regard to the collective unit, creating space and movement teams can't cope with.
Look at last years finals, the Dublin half back line tore Kerry to shreds, covered by the half forwards and enabled by the gaps created by Jack Barry marking Fenton and Fenton moving him out of the central channel. Tactically Kerry were beaten by Fenton and the space he created for the half back line, I always smile when I hear how well Barry does in Fenton. Is there a more attacking back line then Dublin's, I think not or contributed so much in offensive play in big games.
I would also disagree on Dublin being boring, I've said this before but much of the Championship in a labor love, it's not a competition it's a turkey shoot, it's pointless and past it's sell by date, the players look bored, play in third gear and fans are waiting for the real stuff to start and hope for a competition sometime in August. We are the biggest game for everyone, everyone isn't the biggest game for us.
I'd agree with you to an extent, Dublin were risk adverse increasingly so in Gavin's last two years, but I do think I that was the product of the blanket, as every team started to spoil, holding the ball, working high percentage shots and guarding against the counter, became the only way to beat the blanket. I go back though to making a game being a 50/50 proposition - teams never opened up and went for Dublin. You mention the Leinster final last year, Meath didn't score until the end of the first half because all their men where in their own half. The semi Vs Tyrone 17, when they didn't know what to do when a Dublin wouldn't gift them pocession was an embarrassment. Kerrys blanket hanging on for dear life against 14 raging Dublin players in the first game they couldn't contain, Dublin 6 points ahead confidently knocking ball in front of the Kerry blanket with ten mins to go, at least come out and try and play and not allow a five in a row - no.
I suppose in many ways it's great compliment, there hasn't been another team, that other teams have feared and tried every game just to spoil. Mayo to be fair to them went down fighting. Since then the opposition need to ask themselves deep questions. It was a tad bit more expansive and opposition teams were that bit more open up to maybe 16 it changed after that I think, Dublin were breathtaking offensively before I think games involving Dublin became about the blanket dynamic after the 16 final. Why was this the case, because teams knew going head to head they would be pummelled.
As for Mavericks, jeepers that's mad, Dermo, Jack, Alan, Cluxton, Macker, Crazy Horse, Murch the little scamp, they all have their own cults up here. But I can understand people from other counties, we're outstandingly successful, we're still here and have dominated for so long, I can understand most of the country having Dublin fatiuqe and wanting to fire shots, or balm their insecurities.
It's natural and understandable." There is a contradiction in your post there, Kerry played a blanket yet Barry's role on Fenton created all this space in the half back line? That makes no sense at all. Either Kerry played a blanket or they didn't, but both your claims above cannot be true together.
Kerry made the fatal mistake of not watching McCaffery adequately the first day and were too adventurous if anything. They fell back towards the end, at least partly due to pure exhaustion, the body language of the Kerry players is all you need to see to confirm that, the energy was just not there. As I said above their conditioning is an issue they must address because they are a bit off Dublin for now.
I can certainly acknowledge that they did play more conservatively the second day which really surprised me I must say. If rumours are to be believed the management team were not all fully on board with this and it was one of the issues that ultimately led to Donies departure but who know the whole story. I don't think Kerry will play like that again under Keane in any case.

Influence Of Donie Buckley - 14 Like(s)
Replying To ryan: "Thanks for that. On the bit where the county board were adamant that he was part of the set-up does that mean that the county board selected him or the management selected him?" Who knows what went on behind the scenes but the pub talk was that Donie's inclusion on peter Keanes proposed coaching team was a big factor in his selection for the job. The CB know how good he is and wanted him working with the players.

Influence Of Donie Buckley - 14 Like(s)
Replying To ryan: "Donie Buckley is getting a lot of plaudits for his role with Kerry this year. Am i correct in saying that he was involved with Kerry senior team before about 7/8 years ago? By all accounts he is the man that has a big say and Kerry county board made a massive effort to get him on board this year." He was a selector and coach with Kerry until 2012 iirc. The story goes that Jack O'Connor took over some of his duties himself while Donie was out for a while after an operation and Donie found himself with no real role when he came back. He left for Mayo where he was very highly regarded by all accounts.
During the search for a new Kerry manager I think the county board were adamant that he had to be on the ticket. How much influence he is having is difficult to quantify but as well as his overall understanding of the modern game he specialises in defensive technique, tackling, footwork etc and has huge experience at the highest level obviously. If Kerry hadn't snapped him up he would have been highly sought after.

David Gough To Referee The Final - 13 Like(s)
Replying To Joxer: "Gerry, the Stephen O'Brien incident was outside the box. Cooper put his hand on Clifford's shoulder for the penalty. If that happened up the field would you expect a free? No. O'Sullivan took his man down. It was probably a black not yellow. No complaints though. I'm sure the calls will even themselves out over the two games." There were two fouls on Steven, one outside, one inside. Either would have done fine in a game where scores were hard got.
Cooper did a lot more that put a hand on Cliffords shoulder, he had a hold of his jersey and took him out of the play allowing Cluxton a clean catch. Penalty all day long, the rules are clear, albeit it's one that you'd get away with quite a bit. Most defenders would be a lot more cute / subtle in that scenario but I think he had lost the head a bit as he was in all sorts of bother from the throw in.
Small dived for that incident with O'Sullivan, it's clear as day in the replay. Tom has a hand in but Small threw himself up in the air as if he'd been shot. It would have been a very harsh yellow imo and they explained why he wasn't booked on TSG.

GAA on TV - 13 Like(s)
@Killingfields you seem to be taking a really defensive position towards RTE, an organisation with major issues across the board by its own admission.
Their GAA coverage is so bad it's indefensible. Easily improved by getting better analysts and taking a more modern approach to broadcasting. PPV is a totally separate matter, it is up to the GAA who they sell rights to. It is up to RTE to make the most of the rights they have, they are not doing that right now in my view.
Their current affairs coverage is often very watery as pointed out by another poster, often giving the government of the day a very soft ride out of self interest, lest the funding tap be turned off.
As for Love / Hate it was pitched to them and they commissioned it, if they hadn't how do you know BBC wouldn't have done it like they did other Irish themed stuff like Father Ted and the hugely successful Normal People? Like I said, much of their best stuff is bought in, written and produced by third parties. That is all I am saying, no idea why you are hell bent on contradicting me by twisting what I'm saying.
There are huge issues with RTE that are plain for even casual onlookers to see. Of course I don't have all the answers because I don't have all the facts in relation to which departments are making money and which aren't, nor am I paid a six figure salary to come up with all the answers. I'm pretty sure I could do better than stamping my feet and demanding more taxpayers money though. Their chief exec comes across as completely out of her depth.

Replying To moc.dna: "Unbelievable that John Horan is out again defending the inequitable funding which has been proven beyond a doubt. Surely this is the role of the Dublin County Board CEO John Costello & not that of the Uachtaran of the Association who is elected to represent all ! Any comparisons between individual counties is only whitewashing, it must be looked at a nationwide basis. The problem is no one is willing to challenge them or stand up as most elected officials are too busy worrying about their own political ambitions & funding within the Association. If they want analysis let them have independent auditors appointed from Sport Ireland, not from within that they can influence. A certain western seaboard county had a GAA appointed investigation into gate money & credit card mismanagement, the details or actions or consequences to individuals never made public. Let's hope that he doesn't appoint the officials from both Croke Park & Cork County Board involved in the PUC story, to this or he will come up with two different figures, just a couple of Million in the difference. Outcome will be GAA appointed investigation, finds no major difference in funding no matter what way it's played, all the sports journalists were wrong, time to move on, lift the carpet, now where's that brush !" Horan, when discussing Dublin in his supposedly neutral capacity as GAA president refers to them as 'us'. That will tell you all you need to know about his agenda.

GAA on TV - 13 Like(s)
RTE is a national broadcaster with a public service mandate. All it's best content is already delivered by third parties. RTE is virtually worthless and would fold in the morning if the TV Licence subsidy was taken away. SKY would have no interest whatsoever in obtaining it.
SKY's GAA coverage puts RTE to shame but at the same time I would not want to see them get exclusive coverage. While the product would undoubtedly improve dramatically they would be looking for a PPV model the moment their feet were under the table, taking access away from people that can't afford it.
On a wider note RTE's begging to the taxpayers is pathetic, if they cut their costs and developed better content they'd be fine. Their GAA coverage is a microcosm of the issue, it's pretty much the same as it was a decade ago with Spillane, O'Rourke and Brolly (until they ousted him) arguing like auld lads in the pub rather than providing anything by way of analysis. I have no interest in watching that personally. It's a real indictment of their sports department that the coverage had not improved imo, perhaps some people like it but it's not to my taste anyway.
RTE need strong leadership in the coming years but all I have heard from their chief exec since her appointment is whining and looking for even more handouts to keep the show on the road. I have zero faith that there issues will be solved under current management. Their financial issues aren't even that bad, they do however need to develop a strategy to compete in the era of streaming and on demand content. That's a tricky one given their remit to be fair.

No chance." He showed up plenty of big days. He was long past his best really after that bad injury in 2014, never the same when he got back. I don't think he is the greatest ever either but picking one bad game late in his career to prove the point is really disingenuous.

I made the point that Kerry made more income in 2019 then Dublin. A Kerry poster provided this year results this year and i admittedly laughed (which i probably shouldn't have) and pointed out there was a pandemic.
They then want to say Dublin had a secret company and the Dublin audited accounts weren't there real revenue. I said id like to see the source of that. They then asked me to go off and find the information for them.
So in summary, someone i wasnt speaking to, was spoofing then asked me to go of to find information to probe their point. Needless to say, one of the many reasons to avoid the posters in question.

Straight Knockout In SFC, Advantage Who? - 12 Like(s)
Replying To TheUsername: "Thats fine, he was a good prospect, he did well against other teenagers his age, the game is littered with good prospects that never bore fruit, im pointing out the assumption of him being "one of the best players in Ireland" by now - when he never played a senior intercouty game is a bit of a reach.
Jumping from being a good minor to being better then seen it, done it, never beaten in the championship and put your medals on the table Brian Fenton is just mad. Its like saying Jim Stynes was a better midiflder then Jack O Shea (Well now that you mention it). ;)" Given how quickly he progressed down under I don't think it's a reach to say he'd be one of the best players in the country at all. He was the best underage player I ever saw before Clifford and is now a genuine star in the AFL, making the Geelong first team almost straight away when he went down there a few years ago. I find it hard to believe he'd have fallen off the earth if he'd stayed at home.
Fair enough to say you can't compare him to Fenton but he is certainly of that caliber.
What's done is done now and he is gone so it's next man up.

I must say I find Donegal fans to be cagey about this game, most of the people on here saying Donegal will win are not from Donegal. I've friends up there from college and they are reluctant to call it either way.
It was the same in 2014. Donegal were supposedly only travelling to collect the Sam Maguire but all the bluster and hype was coming from anti Kerry people who were dying to see us beaten. Donegal fans are very level headed and passionate about their team in my experience.

Draw was the correct result and they go again. Both sides will feel they should have won it. I was sure Rock would nail that free at the end.
Credit to Dublin who refused to give in when down to fourteen men. I'd expect no less, but they actually looked the more likely to win in the end. Kerry left a lot of scores out there before that and will be disappointed they didn't finish the job.
The obvious conclusion is that with 15 for the full game Dublin will murder Kerry the next time but I'm hoping this game will bring our lads on another bit.
Well done to both sets of players today on a fantastically entertaining game. Was lucky to be there.
