Replying To KooCullen:  "Yes best of luck to both sides, great fixture for neutral supporters.

P.S. Lomans & Shamrocks are the 2 Mullingar sides, not sure why you're calling the Downs a 'Mullingar town team' ?"
The Downs are a town team as they have clearly expanded their territory into the town. Take a drive up the Ardmore road today and you will see all the black and amber flags flying.

If you stand in front of a mirror you'll see what others on this forum see. Bitterness and bile from every pore

Well done to the downs. They had very little wides but Lomans won't sleep after the amount of second half wides, whereas the downs missed very little. Great final. Not sure how Niall Mitchell stayed on the pitch after that sickening hit but not sure it would have made the difference

Great game of football could've went either way , personally think lomans threw it away with them wides in second half. Why was there rules brought in for goal scoring opportunities to be punished as a penalty and black card if the referees aren't goin to use them, Lomans should've had a penalty when Danny Mccartan was through and got pushed other then that was well reffed and congrats to the Downs. Plenty of championships left in that Lomans team

Kelvin Reilly made a meal of it, no different to Jack Geoghegan's hit in the first half. I thought the referee was right to give a yellow card for each. St Loman's had plenty of chances, TJ Cox getting blocked down for a near certain score was a momentum shifter. TJ then made a needless foul at the other end. Ronan O'Toole, only back on Irish soil and arguably the best forward on show. The Downs didn't allow St Loman's to get as many 2 point shots away, only 1 2 pointer from play coming at the very end. Mitchell was being fouled all day, his presence alone caused panic in the St Loman's defence. Eoghan Hogan done well on Luke but the legs were beginning to go in the St Loman's defence towards the end. It was an entertaining final from start to finish.

Doesn't take too kindly to criticism of the County Board. [tick]
Gets terribly upset whenever refereeing is brought up. [tick]
Hmm.

Was down in Kilkenny Friday night (Jesus me head) at a stag. The Downs catchment area goes that far FFS !!! I reckon they should split the downs in half….great Downs and the even greater Downs !

Fair enough I might be looking at it with biased eyes. We left it behind us for sure. Tough one to take would agree with a lot that you've said. I think Lomans have won finals that they've played much worse in. I will say Westmeath Football is in a great place if the county board don't get in their own way with another ludicrous structure next year.

Replying To BadgerDog:  "Lomans would definitely be out of the championship without the benefit of 2 pointers. They scored 6 2 pointers against Tclair and 7 against Kinnegad. However, I can't see The Downs being as naive as the other 2 teams in terms of giving Heslin the opportunity to kick 2 point frees. He got 4 against Tclair (including 2 2 pointers from play) and he got 4 against Kinnegad. If The Downs can keep Lomans to 3 or less 2 pointers then I do think they will win with 6 or 7 to spare. That is obviously easier said than done given Lomans have the most players out of any team in Westmeath that can kick 2 pointers. The Downs I'm sure will have a plan in place and obviously have their own 2 point threats. The Downs' biggest challenge so far has been getting their best 15 on the field. Probably had close to their best against Moate minus maybe 1 or 2 lads. Would like to see The Downs win it as I feel they didn't do themselves justice in Leinster last year and will definitely be looking to right a few wrongs there if they can get over Lomans.
I actually don't think this current Lomans team would do that well in Leinster. They aren't the team they once were despite still reaching a county final and obviously could win it, I think that says more about the rest of the teams than anything."
The Downs kept Lomans to 4 2 pointers, (1 at the very end) which was always going to be a big factor. The Downs struggled again yesterday on the breaking ball, Lomans won far more breaks. I alluded to this after their semi final against Moate where Moate won more breaks than them as well. Having said that they still won both games but I think they could really improve in this area.

cant understand why they dropped Moloney, felt he was superb v Moate. Loughlin did very well on McCartan though that was a good match up by the Downs mgmt, one i wouldnt have expected.

Lomans's will certainly be kicking themselves as this was a game they really could have won. The missed chances were key. When you lose by a point, one looks at so many key moments that could have got them over the line. A draw might have been the fairer result on the day, yet the Downs are still a quality team, are deserved champions and were still able to overcome their softer passage to the final. Good to see Ronan o' Toole back and still playing great football. He should be a big asset to Westmeath if he returns. Mind you, we don't know how changes of personnel ever affect internal dynamics of a team.
Looks like the Downs will be at the top for a while as some younger players have come in and played well. It will be interesting to see will Loman's remain the main opposition over the next 2/3 years or can Kinnegad, Tubberclair and maybe Shamrocks make a challenge. C/K were definitely the next best this year, but not getting a championship in the last 4 years when they were a match for the top 2 will hurt them. As well as that, letting Lomans draw with them in the group this year when they had them on the rack, possibly cost them a county final appearance. Tubberclair will need to get fitter and adjust to playing strong sides regularly so it will be interesting to see can they move things on again next year. Shamrocks have bloodied a lot of new players but are still way off the top 2/3. I don't see any other side in the mix over the next 3/4 years.
Current top 12 ranking
1. The Downs
2. St Lomans
3. C/Kinnegad
4. Tubberclair
5. Shamrocks
6. Garrycastle
7. Moate
8. Athlone
9. Killucan
10. Shandonagh
11. Caulry
12. Tyrellspass
