Its impossible to judge teams in different eras because of opposition and many factors.Maybe the Kerry team in the 00s played weaker teams or maybe rhey played stronger teams. CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 4198 - 23/06/2026 17:12:50 2681555 Link 2 |

Different eras, different fitness levels, different styles, different rules, I don't think even AI could single out the best. But it keeps the high chair talk going.

Exactly and you have to factor in how good or bad were the opposition.Very hard to compare eras.

I thought Kerrys best and most underated player of that era was Declan O Sullivan. That man was constantly in the trenches for Kerry and a man for all seasons. He could defend, carry the ball, hold it up to wait for backup, score and was a brilliant support player. Its difficult to compare players then to now as so much has changed for e.g. the Gooch would not feature on a Kerry team from about 2017 when he retired until the rules changed last year as blanket defenses would have choked him but he would blossom in the new rules now. There was a Tom o Sullivan back then and theres another now also, both very reliable but the one today is an absolute lynchpin for Kerry and his performances for Dingles AI campaign were as good as Ive ever seen. There seemed to be more individual characters back then on every team who took on the game because of the way it was back then where it was less of a system. When David Moran retired a gaping hole was left at midfield for a few years and I felt that really cost Kerry and he was a trojan for Kerry. The new rules have allowed good footballers to blossom and Kerry are miles ahead on that front but nobody can begrudge good football. There are many characters now on the current team who take the game by the scruff of the neck Gavin White, Tom O Sullivan, Paudie, O Connor if they keep themselves injury free a 3 in a row is very possible. I forgot to mention D Clifford as nobody is close to thus man in terms of what he can do. Dothesimplethingswell (Sligo) - Posts: 95 - 23/06/2026 23:40:59 2681628 Link 2 |

the big baggy jerseys don't help that. Its much harder to get hold of a corner forwards jersey these days

I agree and disagree Mick. The game has changed so much in my time following Donegal but we all know great players when we see them in any era. So of course you can never say for certain but I can tell you wee Martin McHugh in his pomp was a sight to behold and would make a fool of many defenders in todays game. It's high stool talk of course but the teams listed in the first post, I wouldn't replace any of that 2000s half back line with the current crop. There is great talent in this Kerry side but they have a ways to go in my view to be seen at the same level as the 2000s (with some obvious exceptions). But maybe that is my nostalgia talking. That 2000s Kerry side were magic and so were Tyrone of the same era. The 2005 final was brilliant. I like thinking about how they would compete with that 6-in-a-row Dublin team. Truly great great players all around. And even though O'Cinneide was around til 2006 and captain in 2004, I really think of him as a late 90s players and of that 2000 team. Moynihan as well. I don't think current Kerry team would have beaten their 2010 - 2019 team, never mind the 2004 - 09 outfit. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 4425 - 27/06/2026 11:06:04 2682180 Link 1 |

Always thought tyrone were a good bit better than kerry in 05,the 3 point gap between the teams at the end flattered kerry. The 08 final was a cracker, with Tyrone being just that bit fitter than kerry going doen the home stretch. Seniorleague (Galway) - Posts: 67 - 27/06/2026 13:28:43 2682201 Link 0 |

In fairness ye didn't spank them 3 years ago. Ye won narrowly after being gifted a goal by a very careless mistake from a kerry defender. Their natural fear of a dublin jersey post 2011 kicked into gear then. Agree generally with your point though. Barring a couple of generational players this kerry team is a tad overrated.
