I would have thought that the only motivation for working hard is financial. I have rarely if ever met anyone in my life who worked hard for fun or relaxation, and I am nearly 80.

How many people do you know that have passion for their work? We all need money. That's a very small part of what you get out of achieving something. I'll put it this way. Would you rather be cared for by a nurse who's motivated by their burning desire to help people, or a farmer's child who entered it for a good pension? It's much more than that. Where you live, what your parents did, whether you can afford grinds. We're competing in a race where one cohort has an insurmountable head start, and those furthest back aren't even aware the race is happening. You can make for and against arguments to support any debate. I was in hospital recently and received excellent and caring treatment from all nurses and doctors - the vast majority of whom were Phillipino, Indian or East European. These people left their own countries for one reason. And I'm glad they did, unlike some of our new found defenders who think that Ireland is full.

Glad you made a speedy recovery, Sure, all reasonable people would like to see qualified nurses and doctors, engineers etc coming to live in Ireland. The concern by many people is that too many coming in are not qualified in anything surely? I'm not saying Ireland is full or anything like that, just for the record. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1783 - 06/04/2026 11:03:08 2664955 Link 1 |

Aren't the unqualified ones doing all the low paid jobs that certain workshy cohorts of Irish people won't do?

I agree with you 100%I have worked in a major hospital in the west of ireland for 45 years and without immigrants the health service would collapse leaving nurse's and doctors aside the vast majority of catering cleaning security and porters are non national for the simple reason irish people will not do these jobs it beneath them
